I hope Ian Holm will reprise his role when Jackson gets around to making The Hobbit.

I love Johnny Depp (tho he fizzled as Willie Wonka), and he is certainly one of the very best. I think Harrison Ford is no longer one of the best; he now seems to mumble most of his lines. Jodie Foster, Ralph Fiennes, Morgan Freeman, Edward Norton, Ewan McGreagor, Angela Bassett, Antonio Banderas, Renee Zellweger, etc. are among my favorites...but who is the best? DeNiro is still great, but he cheapens himself by taking too many crappy roles. On TV, I loooove James Spader, Mary Lynn Rajskub, David Caruso, David Krumholtz, but I think for some of these it is the yummmy factor that makes me like them more than their acting per se...

    Let me say -

Gael Garcia. (who the heck is that?) Well, here's a pic from the movie, 'The Motorcycle Diaries'. And if you are thinking, "Chrissy, you just think that guy is hot," N-oo, that's absurd! tehe. He is a good actor and he may be easy on the eyes, but I barely noticed.

I won't give a best rating. I think different actors are best in various roles. I will say who I generally will make an effort to see...Johnny Depp, Ewan McGreagor, Morgan Freeman, Alan Rickman, Hugh Jackman. Hrm, should add some ladies...Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Sandra Bullock, Natalie Portman (except in the Star Wars movies), Kathy Bates.

There's more, but that's all I can think of at the moment. LOL

I enjoy watching a good movie or TV show from time to time, and I admire the talents of actors who can really slip into character and portray someone convincingly. However, I really don't keep up with names and faces, and I don't have any idea who the best actors are. For the life of me, I really can't figure out why we give actors so much attention and adoration. Actors don't do anything-----------------they pretend to do things. They pretend to be bronc-busting cowboys; they pretend to be hard-boiled detectives; they pretend to be astronauts or gladiators or soldiers or whatever. But they don't actually do anything. I've seen several movies where the main characters have been kids in the 7 or 8 year old range and they did a real good job. That tells me that acting can't be that hard. So why are we willing to give actors so much adulation? Why are we willing to pay them so much money? I realize that very few actors can make 6 or 7 figures, but the fact that any of them do is amazing to me.

Well, I didn't mean hijack the thread---------------------------it's just something I've always wondered about and this seemed like a good chance to vent. Anyone have an explanation?

Im yet to see anyone better than Joe Pesci in Goodfellas.

Robert de Niro is fantastic, but i agree with the poster who said he takes too many crappy roles (meet the fokkers anyone?).

    Gene Hackman is always superb.
