Stop Making Sense
-
Just trying to make some sense of it all
And wondering if anything makes sense at all.
Used to think I had it all figured out,
Never was plagued with questions or doubt.
-
My course was charted, the sails were set,
Then the storms blew in and I got soaking wet.
The Captain said that it wasn't his fault,
That the sea can be cruel and I must stick it out.
-
The ship will protect us and will see us through,
But we all have our part, a job we must do.
"But Captain!" I cried, "Nothing seems right!"
"The winds won't let up and there's no land in sight."
-
"You said you were wise and could find our way home."
"But we're drifting in circles, lost and alone."
"Surely, by now, after all of these years,"
"We should see our way clearly through all our shed tears."
-
Searching for the full moon one stormy night,
She approached me softly, filled with dread and fright.
"Are you lost?" she asked, "For I am, too."
"If you leave this ship, will you take me with you?"
-
We traveled ahead for long days on end,
Battling the seas and the strong raging wind.
Our boat seemed small in sight of that ship,
We weren't yet clear how to chart our own trip.
-
The Captain had chained the rest of the crew
For fear that they might abandon ship, too.
They mocked us and stared out from sad, sunken eyes.
"Can't you see we are free?" they said, as they prayed to die.
-
"We are safe!" they cried, as their mast started to crack.
"If the sea should claim us, we shall all come back."
"The Captain lied!" I retorted. "He is afraid and alone."
"He has no answers and his heart is of stone."
-
They covered their ears, for fear we were right.
We set a new course and they faded from sight.
The dolphins and sea gulls are our friends now.
Contented and carefree they play near our bow.
-
Could it be that they know what we've journeyed to find?
That each moment is an answer from the universal mind?
If our questions are all wrong and our doubt brings pain,
Do we miss the truths that each moment contains?
-
If instead we embrace every joy, every pain,
Perhaps then we will align with the cosmic plane.
