That's fascinating , Englishman. I've never heard this historical tale before.
However, the Puritans were merely ONE small group which fled to the Americas. I hardly think that this one radical group is responsible for the majority's way of thinking. The Puritans, as HORRIBLE as they were (yes, they were an evil bunch), may have been amongst the first religious groups to settle North America, but they were hardly the 'founders'. Many Christian denominations founded numerous states in the US. My state, Maryland, was founded by Catholic refugees. Pennsylvania was founded by another, and so on. Most of the original colonists were fleeing Europe to pursue religious freedom which was denied to them (or they were dumped here from British prisons, which is another story), so that's most likely why US citizens hold a higher deity-based belief system than Europeans.
One more edit: Religion in Europe during this time seemed to be all about politics and oppression, so why would the average, complacent citizen take it to heart? Christianity wouldn't exactly be a welcome ideology. So, regardless of sect, any denomination that came to North America would take religion much more personally.
Their attitudes to sex, God and the Bible would become the cultural DNA of the United States.
Agreed. Just look at our broadcast television and advertising compared to Europe.
Thanks for the post Eman.
They were known as Separatists because they planned to found a church outside the official Church of England. Sounds harmless? It wasn’t. In their fundamentalist theocracy pubs would be closed
Now, that's just so wrong.
Why try to build a nation based on the Bible - did they run out of sand?
Megadude, I couldn't agree more.

I'd rather see their churches burned to the ground.
Actually we did have Prohibition in America in 1920 where for over 10 years you could not legally buy and drink alcohol. Not that it stopped anybody from drinking.
As to the fanatics that founded America, they were fleeing the horrific religious fanatics in Europe that beat them, tortured them, jailed them, burned them alive, for having differing religious opinions. Many people came to America for the freedom to practice their religion as they believed. Not that they believed in freedom of religion. They believed in freedom of religion for their particular sect. LOL.
DNA being what it is, if that's where the American, 'whites' came from it's hardly surprising that the US had such a 'nutty' christian fundamentalist over tone to it.
Some of these people openly pray when they're having their dinners at a diner!
Praying at meal times....my God! Still sends an embarrassed cringing shudder down my spine now!

Ah, the irony, and the obvious parallels to Watchtower, vigorously fighting it out in the courts so that they can have the freedom to be tyrants.

Funny how the hypocritical Puritans did the same thing when they got here...Hey, as long as they could 'justify' their actions in the Bible, it was all good.
The Bible can be one dangerous tool.
