That's only because Europe taxes the hell out of gas.

Of course that is it, what else could it be.....
Well, we get a lot of good things in return ....

Anyway it does not affect the society at all. It will affect only the wallet of the individual brothers and sisters.
But it is better to do the FS with the biclycle of course. It takes more time (and this is one of the only things in life where this is actually good), and it is cheaper. Using a bike is also easier, and you can easier witness people walking on the street

    It's £4.50 a gallon here which I think is about $9!

Wow. And this doesn't affect your society at all?

Europeans must be rich. I think I'll become an Amerimexican and move to London for a couple years, save up lots of pounds, and come back to the States and live like a king.

Correct in Britain for very £1 spent on petrol (gas) 80p goes in tax. So it you pay £4.50 for a gallon .... £3.60 is tax...90p for the petrol. Yet no one seems to complain that when they go out for a drink and pay on average £2.50 for a pint beer/lager (part of which is tax also), that they are paying £20 for a gallon of beer. So on average for every 2 pints of beer, you could have bought one gallon of petrol.

May I ask an ignorant question of the Brits?

So why did the discovery of massive amounts of oil in the North Sea not translate into lower gasoline prices?

Because the government saw a great way to make money out of the population by tax.

Again, forgive my ignorance, but how so?

I ask this because I'm from Texas which traditionally has some of the lowest gas prices in America because Texas (at one time) had more oil than anywhere except Alaska.

Again, forgive my ignorance, but how so?

    Because they could.

If a government wants to tax something it will do. And this Labour government will do given half the chance.

We have a tax called Value Added Tax (VAT) which is applied to practically everything that you buy or sell, and certain services you may have to employ. It runs at a rate of 17.5% , so if something costs £1 , then you pay £1.18. I suppose the nearest equivilent for an American is Sales Tax.

The cost of petrol is made of of Road Tax , which is suppose to go towards cost of maintaining the roads etc. Then to that is added VAT. So you could say petrol is taxed twice.

Gas is higher in the US but I've paid more living out of the US. Its not that those in other areas are rivher, they just aren't married to their cars and public transportation is great and car costs are less. Out of the us, insurance runs $250 a year. In the US, I pay $600 every 6 months for a luxury sports car and SUV. Ever wonder why Brits drive cars like the clowns in the circus? Its not like they are trying to be clowns but they want fuel efficient cars.

Ca is litre, no? 4 litres to a gallon so like $4.24 an imperial gallon? That would be $3.71 a gallon, a bit more than the US. Mexico is cheap and I went to Venezuela and gas was SOOOOOOOOOOO cheap, you could fill up for like 1 or 2 US dollars, and make internationals calls from cabins (call centres) for 7 cents a minute. Ciber cafes were 50 cents an hour.
