alter the deaths of those now dead and sacrifice those who came into existance because of the war?
That's interesting Zen - in what way could you account yourself alive because of the war?

If time travel were possible I would kill Hitler or Stalin in 1931 or even as babies in their cribs. The people who were born because of the circumstances of World War Two have no greater right to life then the 55 million lives lost in the war and the countless millions slaughtered by Stalin before the war.

If time travel were possible, I would not choose to go back to 1931. If I wanted to change history (which I'm not sure is a good thing -- could things turn out even worse in some way?), I would go back to his hometown on July 1st, 1888, find a way to keep Mama and Papa Hitler separated for a month (such as frame Papa Hitler for some minor offense that carries a month-long sentence, treat Mama Hitler and her mother to a month-long vacation in the Riviera, etc.), and watch the two of them happily have marital relations when Papa is set free and reunited with his family. Won't matter, cuz whoever Mama gives birth to, it won't be our Adolph. 50/50 odds their child will be a girl, assuming that even a conception occurs.
That solution totally avoids the moral dilemma, other than getting someone convicted for a minor offense he didn't commit.

Oh oh, hypothetical history, fun fun
Well, let`s say you did kill Hitler in 1931. Let`s say, as a result of this, there would have been no National Socialism, no nazi-regime, no genocide of the jews, no 55 million killed 1939-1945. Eventually, the USSR would have grown stronger, and so would the USA. Tensions would have grown, and perhaps both sides would have developed nuclear weapons, at least during the 50s or 60s. What if the USSR had invaded Europe, with a following intervention by the U.S? Nuclear weapons would have been used....the death toll could have amounted to 10 times the number killed in WW2, maybe even more. Would you have liked to have that on your conscience?

Does he have to be killed to prevent him from seizing power? Maybe (knowing history and how Hitler played on the circumstances) one could pre-empt him and take power instead? Then make your own vision of an Uber-Utopia.
[Edited to add - No eugenics! And it has nothing to do with the fact that I'm a short hairy guy.]

...or bring him back to the 21st century and put the "nurture" theory to the test

4/ What if killing him releases a far greater evil on the world - you just don't know.
For instance, a "saner" leader than Hitler might have maintained the truce with the Soviets instead of marching into Russia in 1942 and forcing his troops to wage a war on two fronts. But for that incredible blunder, the German army would now rule the world.
