Our New Orleans is gone.

Funny thing, the BEST memory I have was being in New Orleans for a convention. Well, I was a kids, I think it might have been 1982, not real sure, things run together for me way back then. Seems they had just released the My Book of Bible Stories.

I got my first My Book of Bible Stories at one of the conventions in New Orleans, too. I remember how excited I was that we were in a big city. But I think it was earlier than '82, possibly '78? I think I was in kindergarten or first grade.

I went back about twenty years later for Mardi Gras, it was a totally different experience.

My heart goes out for those effected by this tragedy. And for those who have taken these people in and have done their best to help and comfort them, God bless you.

If New Orleans does get rebuilt, we absolutely have to have an international apostafest there

Would rebuilding it there again be the wisest thing? Is it an option to rebuild somewhere else?

Probably not, but we have to have a port on the mississipi and as bad as new orleans was, i believe any other viable place for a port would be worse. The mississipi runs through the center of the country and trade from all over the world arrives there and is distributed nationwide. The city started with the French Quarter which is slightly above sea level because it was one of the few places in that area that was. I dont know any other place we could have a major port on the mississipi delta. Those more familiar with that part of the country may correct me, im coming from the point of view that cities usually develop where they do for a logical reason.

It was historic and home to many people, but built in a very bad place. Would rebuilding it there again be the wisest thing? Is it an option to rebuild somewhere else?

One of the Congressmen, Dennis Hastert, said yesterday that it should be bulldozed and not rebuilt. I kind of agree.

Many of the people who were evacuated to Texas have said they lost everything and have no reason to go back so they aren't. I can't blame them. There will be hurricans the rest of this month, into November and then there is next year. I wouldn't ever feel safe again.

London is where it is because it is on the Thames river near the mouth. Similarly major city on the Nile delta and so on - Babylon is/was between the Tigris and Euphrates. Peopple build on flood plains of rivers because the land is so damned fertile an so on

Yes and New Orleans is where it is because Huge Ships can dock there and smaller vessels can travel up the missisippi carrying those goods. If you built a port farther up the river on safer ground, it would only be traversable by smaller vessels and i assume that would affect the prices of imported goods.

I never realised the scale and significance of this whole event - as a backdrop to the real human suffering there is the end of something special. New Orleans is gone. The houses that have been flood damaged will in all liklehood have to be rebuilt but it seems to be an area of high poverty so, who will rebuild those homes? Its quite amazing to see almost an entire city destroyed in a day - a sobering thought.

I know that many don't believe the bible here which is fine - its just very humbling to see how in just 24 hours everything that we make with our own hands can be gone, taken from us. Its a biblical moment even without religion.

I just got ahold of my counsin and Aunt who live in New Orleans, they evacuated to friends house in Baton Rouge...I am so glad to hear from them.

I found them by going on google and typed in his name and since he is big into jazz music down there it was easy to find him. He plays Bass guitar, and New Orleans was heaven for him in that regard.

He told me that the only reason he loved New Orleans was for the musicial opportunities and the culture , and there are many great people. He feels like I do that even if they rebuild it will not be the same old New Orleans.

He also told me that he is hearing tons of horror stories from so many of his friends that are now in Baton Rouge. He said the stories you hear are too graphic to tell on TV. These are first hand accounts . He said the news can not show all what they have seen, peoples comments and interviews are either cut off or edited, because they just can't put it on TV.

Unfortunately, these are the accounts I've heard as well...especially those that fled from the Superdome and Convention Hall. I doubt we have even seen the tip of the iceberg on this one.
