What is the government's plan here? Is this a convenient way to remove several thousand undesirables from the Welfare rolls? I watch what is going on at the Superdome and the Convention center, and it looks like some backwater African nation you see on Sunday morning on a Feed The Children special. But this is in the richest country on the planet! When the hell is somebody with a brain going to Take Responsibility and start making forward movement?

Attached is a link to Fox News from Friday night. Watch two field reporters lose patience with Sean Hannity, a Republican Ass-Kisser of the highest order. Oh, and one of them is Geraldo Rivera, who acts like he has lost all reportorial detachment in the face of Hell on Earth.

No. The Nazi's would have been picking off the survivors with their rifles.

I think I understand the point you are trying to make, though -- The frustration in your post is palpable. You aren't alone in that feeling -- a lot of that going around, in addition to the overwhelming sense of grief. (CS))

Thanks so much to the many here, and elsewhere, who have expressed compassion for those suffering from Katrina -- in both their words and their actions.

I can't believe Geraldo just made me cry

When I see two FOX News reporters lose their cool, then I believe there is a major problem. Thanks for the link.

I think the Nazi reference is inappropriate, but this lack of support is bordering on passive-aggressive behavior.

Which backwater African country did you have in mind??

No one gives a rat's ass about richest country on earth, the irony being that poor countries treat their citizens with more feeling, urgency and humanity than I've seen this past week. Nonsense, see how you treat the poor amongst you?! Just face up to the relief, and stop drawing stupid analogies with backwater African countries you've probably never seen.

There's always more than could be done, but where do you propose we put an entire city full of people? Build another city over night?

I'm sure this is more complicated than we're aware.

I'm still dealing with the fact that people in my own country have died from thirst that could have been quenched after day 1. Every day since this has happened I think I'll be less angry the next day BUT my anger just keeps growing.

No need to be hostile to me, Gozz. We're on the same side, I think.

I was just amazed at how every one at the Superdome was kept locked in at the Superdome, even after conditions were so bad that it would have been better to be left to your own devices out in the flood zones.

I mean, if you kept rabbits in a pen that was half as filthy and as horrible as what has been reported, your Daddy would have taken you out back and beat you till you couldn't sit for a month. And yet, this was allowed to happen to human beings! It reminded me of the way the Jews were herded into railcars, or the way the Japanese Americans were done the same way during WW2.

So here we have a large group of people, and yes, they are Black, being herded together in a condition of misery that wasn't alleviated for days! It looked, at first glance, like the Third World on TV. And I am just amazed at the governmental incompetence that allowed people to be abandoned at the Convention center for 3 days with no food, no relief, no crowd control.

On Thursday afternoon, the head of Homeland Security, in an interview on NPR, had no idea that there were several thousand people at the Convention Center. He wouldn't believe what the reporter was telling him at first, saying it must be rumor or anecdotal stories. Even though everyone watching CNN knew they were there, the people in charge of the first wave of rescue and relief had no clue. And then he kept going on about how people were getting relief in the "proper" staging areas, as if they should have been at the Superdome, and not the Convention Center, EVEN THOUGH these people WERE TOLD to go to the Convention Center!

Were these people just ignored because they were Black, and therefore, automatically dangerous in a large group? I get the feeling that's the underlying subtext to what happened.

If these had been people from a convention of the Gulf Coast Yacht Club, how fast would relief have gotten there?

Having relatives who were murdered by Stalin AND the Nazi's, and a girlfriend who was booted to death by skinheads, I for one am SICK to DEATH of the constant comparison's, this guy's a "nazi" That guy is a "nazi".

The Nazi's systematically murdered Not only Jew's but Gypsies, handicapped, and politcal prisoners by the millions. On purpose. This is a natural disater handled with incometence. To compare the two demeans the memories of those who were brutally and systematically murdered and those who fought to stop them.

Quoting here again, my reason for the comparison.

I really do believe that in many respects, and across a great cross-section of this country, African-Americans are regarded as a troublesome, dangerous underclass that would probably not be missed if they all disappeared. It is reflected by the attitudes of people I work with, by the news reports that always seem to focus on crimes that happen in predominately Black neighborhoods, and by the way well-intentioned gov't programs have devolved into creating a permanent underclass. Hence, the Nazi/Jew comparsion (maybe it is a little strong.)

A co-worker of mine had to cancel a trip to Jamaica because of a physical injury. So I commented to him that it could be worse, he could be in New Orleans. To which he replied, "Yeah, then I could go fishing for Colored People!"

That pretty much sums it up for me.
