What Would YOU Have Done Differently For Hurricane Relief?

Not played Golf the next day as reportedly the President did

Declare Martial Law immediately and take charge of the State and Local Government Agencies - take Federal control of all Oil/Petroleum businesses to prevent price fixing - why immediately raising petrol (gas) prices is OK when its "looting" for a mother with dying children to take water bottles from ruined/empty shops

Order the National Guard in at once, mobilise the Fleet and move troops from bases in the US to the disaster area.

Also - stop smirking - why does he do it - is he psychologically flawed?

I'm a firefighter who has helped formulate plans for the northern Illinois area, and one glaring mistake that I saw was that they identified the Superdome and Civic center as temp housing years ago in their FEMA approved disaster plans and never prepositioned food, water and supplies at these locations.

I agree. I don't understand. Clinton used to smirk inappropriately too...at least that's how I saw it. I know it's irrelevant to the topic, but it infuriates me. He looks like he's had a lobotomy.

I don't know exactly what should have been done to prevent this. Living in New Orleans has been always been a gamble given it's location. They've been working on the levies for years, but knew they were only rated for a Cat 3 storm. I guess they hoped they'd never be hit by a biggie.

Watching Weather Channel reports, I was very surprised that they hadn't declared mandatory evacuations much, much sooner. The storm had gained Cat 5 strength and predictions were for almost a direct hit on the city. That was when the decision should have been made...days before it hit.

They did have a contra-flow plan for the highway system so more people who had vehicles or access to transportation could leave the area, but was that it? No other evacuation plans in place for a city sitting like a soup bowl waiting to be filled?

I'd be interested to know the whole story. If they thought it was too hard/too expensive to get everybody out. If they didn't even bother making a comprehensive evacuation plan at all, so didn't know what to do. It didn't even seem like their designated shelters in the city were properly set up and ready. Why not? Money? Probably. Such an incredible tragedy.

I would have brought in, by helicopter, MRE's, water, and active duty military to provide security, medical needs and " theatre " info to Command and Control.

Maybe Bush smirks in the same way that nervous people laugh---at the wrong times. It looks bad.
