On September 5, 2005, it will be the 2 year anniversary since Bethany Hughes died due to her refusal to take blood transfusions to treat her leukemia.

I was just thinking how wonderful it would be if everyone here who was an eligible blood donor to make a donation of blood and sign a card at the donation center stating that you gave blood in honour of Bethany, or another JW child who died as a result of the WTS's ban on blood transfusions.

My next eligiblity date as a blood donor isn't until October, but I will be making my donation in Bethany's honour.

I think that's a beautiful idea, Scully. I will do that. I'm about due to donate again.

I am a universal donor and have been donating every 8 weeks for the last year. I was on vacation and missed my 8 week time frame so I am going in on Tuesday.

There is some small discomfort as in most blood drawings. I am an absolute chicken, but I go in. I figure if I will accept a blood transfusion that I should donate unless there is some medical barrier.

Charter even has a campaign with prizes and knicknacks for donors.

    Scully-

What a great idea. Some other nurses and I are going next week to help with a Red Cross blood drive. I'm also going to email my other nurse friends in DFW that hate having to deal with these people who are willing to let someone die a senseless death.

Several of these nurses were there the day I got to have the elders escorted out by security. They were also told if they set foot on the hospital property they'd call the police. I was surprised when different ellders didn't show up. Think maybe they were smart enough to figure out it'd just happen again.

I challenge everyone here on the board to go and donate!! (All those that are physically able!) Who knows, maybe the part of the blood that is acceptable for them to use---might have been provided by an exJW!! Think of the irony!!!

Great idea Scully! I just gave blood for the third time last month. Since the Canadian Blood Services comes to my work and sets up a clinic in the auditorium, it's very convenient for me. I've never seen a place where you could sign a card saying you were donating in anyone's honour though...maybe because it's a temporary clinic. The first two times I gave blood, I had no problems at all other than the fact that my blood pressure is low so it took a bit longer than most. Last time I gave blood I sat up at a 45 degree-ish angle to do it instead of lying down like the first two times. My blood came out much faster, but I would recommend to any new givers to lie down! I started to pass out but the wonderful nurses who were taking my blood came to my aid, laid me down, and put cold compresses on me until I came back around. I've never fainted before, so that was a new experience! It won't stop me from donating again though. I will just be sure to drink lots of water and eat a good meal first...and especially to lie down while giving blood!

Scully what a wonderful idea! I have never given blood before, but I definately will now.

Thank you for posting this! Hopefully everyone who is physically able to donate blood will be inspired to do so as well.

I'm due this fall again. I never saw anything that you can give 'in honor of '. But, I will ask. Lovely idea, carla

Thank you to everyone who will be donating blood in Bethany's memory!

Maybe you know someone who died because they followed the WTS's ban on blood transfusions. Why not donate in their honour? Or perhaps there will be a news article about someone who dies after refusing blood.... if you are eligible to donate at that time, why not make a donation in that person's name?

Check the Watchtower Victims Memorial. It is a partial list, a very small sampling of JWs and/or JW children who died due to the WTS's ban on blood transfusions. Do you know someone there? Or someone whose name should be added (in addition to Bethany's)?

    Love, Scully
