I watched Gilligan's Island a lot when growing up, and also in reruns. This is sad news.
When I eat Manicotti I always think of the episode in which they all thought that the bite of the insect 'Mantis Cotti' was lethal. Great episode.

Bob Denver was a good comedy actor. I've heard comedy isn't easy (I should know, my feeble attempts at humor don't often draw laughs). Yet in his roles as beatnik Maynard G. Krebs in "The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis" (Work??!!!!) and castaway Gilligan, he made comedy look easy.
It is easy to dismiss Gilligan's Island as lightweight TV fare. And yet look at the variety of people shown on the island and how the show portrayed human interaction among them, with a comedic touch! It seems that Gilligan's Island was way ahead of its time -- look at the "reality" TV shows that make drama out of the same subject.
So, in memory of Bob Denver:
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale
a tale of a fateful trip,
that started from this tropic port,
aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailin' man,
the Skipper brave and sure,
five passengers set sail that day,
for a three hour tour,
a three hour tour.
The weather started getting rough,
the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
the Minnow would be lost.
The Minnow would be lost.
The ship aground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
with Gilligan,
the Skipper too.
A millionaire and his wife,
a movie star,
the professor and Mary Ann,
here on Gilligan's Isle.
(Ending verse)
So this is the tale of our castaways,
they're here for a long long time.
They'll have to make the best of things,
it's an uphill climb.
The first mate and his Skipper too
will do their very best,
to make the others comf'terble
in their tropic island nest.
No phone ,no lights, no motor car,
not a single luxury
like Robinson Crusoe
it's primitive as can be.
So join us here each week my friends,
you're sure to get a smile,
from seven stranded castaways
here on Gilligan's Isle! -

I remember when he told the JW's to leave his concert. That was pretty cool.

Tale of Two Cities (Denver, Actually)
A quick conversation, over dinner...
Me: So, what's the theme tonight?
Beth: What? What're you talking about?
Me: Tonight. Its the night of extremely high quality television.
Beth: Oh, that's right. Isn't it about time to roll out the washed up celebrities?
Me: I'd forgotten about that.
Beth: Oooh, Bob Denver! They could all sing Bob Denver songs!
Me: ...
Beth: Why are you looking at me like that?
Me: ...
Beth: What?
Me: Bob Denver is Gilligan.
Beth: Yeah.
Me: Do you mean John Denver?
Beth: Oh.
Me: Bob Denver...Little Buddy. John Denver...Rocky Mountain high country-boy.
Beth: I always kinda thought they were the same person.
Me: Nope. John Denver's dead so Bob's going to be vastly more entertaining.
Beth: They could all just sing the Gilligan's Island theme.
Me: Better than some of the crap they've been singing lately. For future reference. Bob and John...

In one episode, the JW's came floating to Gilligan's Island with their "good news". And Bob Denver told them to buzz off!
