Not sure if this was posted yet, but the boys in Bethel are at it again. The October 15th Botchtower study article is, not so surprisingly, very negative and down on any parents that are encouraging their children to go to university. I don't have a scanner here, so I'll have to highlight some of the more vomitous (is that a word?) points:
Par 9: .....In other words, quality higher education is fast becomng the domain of the rich and influential, who put their children through it to ensure that they too become the rich and influential of this system. Should Christian parents choose such a goal for their children? Or should they just let them become Cheese and Cracker Bros?
10: .....one Southeast Asian country, the governent runs a "pyramid-style school structure that ....pushes the cream to the top." "The top" ultimately means placement in the world's elite institutions--Oxford and Cambridge in England, the Ivy League schools in the United States and others......Though such a say of life is highly sought-after in the world, is it what Christian parents want for their children?
It then drones on about the "bad environment"....drinking and hazing and sex...
12 .....In addition to the bad environment, there is pressure of schoolwork and examinations (no shit Sherlock). Naturally students need to study and do their homeowrk to pass the exams. Some may also need to hold at least a part time job....Alll of this takes a great deal of their time and energy. What then will be left for spiritual activities? When pressure mount, what will be let go? Will Kingdom interest still come first, or will they be put aside?...........How sad that some have fallen away from the faith as a result of succumbing to the demands on their time and energy or of getting entagled in unscriptural conduct at college!
13....Of course, immorality, bad behaviour and pressure are by no means limited to college or university......many worldly youth view all such things as part of the education. Should Christian parents knowingly expose their children to that kind of environment for four or perhaps more years? Is the risk involved worth whatever benefit the young ones may receive? What are the young ones learning about things that should come first in their life?
14....Today, the popular opinion is that for young people to succeed, the only option is to get a university education. However, instead of following what is popular, Christians heed the Bible's admonitions: "Quit being fashioned after this sytem of things...."
15.....Rather than be caught up by the materialistic spirit of the world, all of us need to keep our senses---our spiritual bearings. If you are a young person, ask yourself: 'Am I putting forth my best effort to accomplish my ministry" to make myself a qualified minister of God'sWord? What are my plans for pursuing my ministry "fully"? Have I considered taking up full-time service as a career? These are challenging questions, especially when you see other youths indulging in selfish pursuits, 'seeking great things' that they think will lead to a bright future.
16....."Mother watched our association very closely" recalls a sexually repressed goomba who's now a CO the eldest of three boys in one family.....We did not associate with our schoolmates but only those in the congregation who had good spiritual habits. She also invited those in the full-time service---missionaries, traveling overseers, Bethelites, and pioneers--to our home. In other words, she was an ass-kisser trying to climb the social ladder within the congregation.
19.....Compared with the positions and rewards that the world offers, a career in full time service to Jehovah is without doubt the surest way to a life of joy and contentment. Its' also the the surest way to the Soup Kitchen and Food Stamps.
IN OTHER WORDS: DON'T GO TO UNIVERSITY!! IT CAUSES INDEPENDENT THINKING!!!!
So there you have it: university is once again a big no-no. While these are of course "suggestions", you know full well that anyone in the congregation who encourages their kids to go to university now, is going to be seen as "spiritually weak" and wanting to be "puffed up with knowledge." Yes, it's better to just go work at some crappy job that pays $8.00/hr with no benefits at all, rather than get a degree that might actually lead to a decent paying job with benefits for you and your family.

Keep them ignorant, keep them poor, then all they have is the "hope of the paradise" when all their dreams can come true.
Rather than education, hard work, and earning their way to their own home, their own share of things.
My mother is a staunch JW advocate who is ANTI-education and she raised me in a trailer while we pioneered.... and when the "joy and contentment" of pioneering didn't feed us we accepted government food and food stamps.

Why would they want anyone to go to college. That means people will start thinking for themselves, asking questions, and maybe figuring things out on their own. We all know what that means. They can't have anyone questioning the beliefs of JWs, then they'll loose not just people, but lots of money. Haven't they pretty well proved that's what they are all about!!??!!

My apathetic ass has been riled by this! I'm going to attend that Sunday and personally encourage each and every teenager there to get a post-secondary education if thats their desire. I'll tell them that only the ignorant would criticize them for it.
I'll admit that I didn't get treated any worse in my old congregation for going to university. I think it had everything to do with us being a foreign language congregation entirely made up of european immigrants (and their children - some born in europe and some here in Canada). All of them, were concerned with improving the lot of their children and most of them realized the importance of a good education.
There was only one elder there, who seriously took the tales on the dangers of university, and was genuinely worried about me. He was never critical of me though, but just wanted to see how I was doing. The english dubs on the other hand were too quick to swallow anything their Mommy had to say about the evils of higher education.
I'm getting royally pissed now thinking of a couple of incidents when I ended up going to serivce in the english territory. This one dub comes to mind repeatedly, seeing as she also put me down a few times before for having gone to a catholic highschool.
Who knows? I may even comment at that study, and I'll be reading up on Blondie's incisive comments for awesome ideas.

Hey, Ash, it's lovely to see you posting again! Where've you been?
So education is getting panned again by the Borg..........but it's all right for it to have its band of educated lawyers in Crooklyn! The hypocrisy goes way up to heaven!
Watchtower knows it's losing its youngsters to the world - YIPPEE! Hopefully, this internet generation will be the last one brought up in the Borg and the first to exit in mighty droves. It makes me feel sooooooooooooo good!

arggg!!!!! this is the kind of thing that makes me soooo angry....i myself am in higher education and im having the time of my life as well as learning some very valuable skills that will hopefully secure me a career in art and fashion,
my now ex-boyf showed a profound interest in art and was considering studying it and even did a portrait of me!!!! since returning from a fortnight away with family he has ended our relationship and decided that education isnt for him!!
Is the whole J.W cult thing based on fear?

Why would they say that? What is the goal?
Perhaps to have brothers and sisters too uneducated to read the internet and then leave.

What does the WTS see?
Of the young JWs that stay:
1. Fewer young men are volunteering for Bethel service or to be regular pioneers.
2. Fewer young men are "reaching out" to be MS thus elders.
3. More and more baptized and never baptized children of JWs are leaving the WTS
There has to be a reason. It can't be the hypocrisy they see in the parental home and the KH, can it?
It can't be that they are internet savvy and are finding the "truth" about the WT history and doctrines?
Recently, the WTS lambasted the parents for not "inculcating" WT doctrine in their children from "infancy."
Now it is "higher education" that is at fault.
Or Satan and his earthly "minions."
But never will the WTS take responsibility after all the FDS resides with them and they get their directions straight from God through the holy spirit (right!).
