The sirens of titan is unforgettable for me. I still remember the word he used in it: chronosynclasticinfundibulum. My spelling is probably different.

Hmmm....I just took a look at Wikipedia and it says that Kurt regards Mark Twain as "an American saint" and named his only son after him.

But really, watching him on the telly, I felt like Mark Twain if he never died would be something like this if he were around today....

I saw him give a lecture a couple of years back. It happened to coincide with the anniversary of the bombing of Dresden, and it was on the eve of the invasion of Iraq. He stated that "our young president" did not fully comprehend that war was an ugly, awful thing, and that he was foolishly rushing into something beyond his comprehension.

And can you believe that there were people walking out during this, as if they were surprised he was saying such things. The weirdest walkouts were the the couple carrying the Bible, and a HUGE cross dangling from the husband's neck. Of course, they could have been offended by his other comments. Apparently, he is the honorary chairman of a Freethinker's group. He inherited the position when Isaac Asimov died. When he addressed the group for the first time since assuming his duties, he started off with "Well, Isaac's in Heaven now...", which he said got the best reaction out of any joke he's ever told. People were pounding on tables, falling off chairs, laughing so hard. I thought it was a pretty funny joke myself.

By the way, if you want to see the BEST adaptation of one of his works, look for "Mother Night" starring Nick Nolte, directed by Keith Gordon. It was one that Vonnegut had direct involvement with (he even has a cameo). It was an amazing movie.

Also look for a very funny cameo he did in the Rodney Dangerfield movie, "Back to School".

    ...and so it goes....

Twain as I recall was staunchly antiwar and antireligion particularly when it came to the churchs stance on WW1. I reckon he (Twain/Clements) was a World saint

    Hey Capn,

Right you are. Mother Night is well done. I think that Slaughterhouse five is pretty much one of the best as well. There have been some real crap out there though.

I didn't know he was on or I would have watched. Shoot. Loved Galapagos too. Also loved Jailbird. He can say so much in so few words its creepy.

If you follow the link that was posted earlier, you will eventually find on the Daily Show website the video from the show.

    Enjoy!

it's reading stuff like this that makes me regret not having cable. Although with this situation past, I don't see the need to ever have cable again. Vonnegut on the Daily Show? Doesn't get much better than that. I love all of his books, but I think I'd have to say that my two favorites are Cat's Cradle and Breakfast of Champions, with Bluebeard coming in as a close runner up.

I heard him speak after the release of Foma, Wampeter, and Granfaloons (sp?). It was cool to hear his words in his own voice. And I have no idea how I didn't see the Twain resemblance before.
