According to the WT, the wine is passed around, once a year, to all those who have been "chosen". They believe that this is a requirement, set out in the Holy Scriptures and is proof that they are of the anointed class.
Has anyone any idea what happened during the time of Prohibition in the US, when it was against the law of the land to purchase alcohol? Did they use a substitute?

That's a good question...I have no answer for it.
Wasn't prohibition just against hard liquor? It would exclude beer and wine.

ummm...not sure about that. My great grandfather made beer in a bath tub and it was always implied that it was because of it being during prohibition.

so, I guess if it wasn't over a certian "proof" it could go so long as local laws weren't different from State and US laws. So, maybe they watered it down...but then again it's JWs and they tend to take pride in not obeying the law.

haha....I know. My grandma also made it in her bathtub just years before she passed away in the early 90's. My grandma even used the beer she made as a hair conditioner!

I've looked it up and apparently there was not only more than one prohibition, but when it was repealed, the laws varied from state to state.

I wonder if there was an exception made for communion wine just as there was for doctors prescriptions "medinical purposes"
