Good advice, Billygoat.
good advice Billygoat!! So far the only plan I have is for when the power goes out, I have a campstove to cook food on.
I am more then willing to be the 100 kilometer contact/safe place for Kwin and family and Tal and family and Shera and family if you guys need.

Not really. I live in Buffalo so our biggest worry in being buried under 7 ft. of snow, which happened in 2000, 1985, and 1977. I stock up on food and meds anyway, since I live alone and am disabled. Oh, also I'm near Niaraga Falls, which produces power for much of the Northeast and has its own major Airforce base, so the terrorists would likely come after those which means I'm certain to be fried.
Our plan has several options and I keep an emergency bag that holds food for a week, change of clothes, toiletries, batteryless shortwave;am;fm radio, 2 2-way radios, firstaid kit and 6 gallons of water in the garage at all times.

I encourage all to check out the www.redcross.org and for those in canada www.redcross.ca websites for emergency preparedness suggestions.
I used to teach emergency preparedness for a living prior to being hired by the Red Cross as their Disaster Management Director for my area.
A 3 day minimum (food & water) as a personal preparedness initiative is encouraged. This includes food, water and medication.
Please do not forget Fire protection. Have a plan especially for the little ones. They should know to get outside and meet Daddy and Mommy at... otherwise they will try to get to your bedroom. Prepare and practice your plans.
This is a huge risk on my part but important for those on this site ... [edited by request] if you need any help in this regard. ( note will be deleted within 2 hours of posting)
Billy, this is something I have been thinking about and working on since Katrina. We usually have plenty of canned food for us, but I need to stock up more on supplies for the ferret.
cyg...I grew up in New England, I hear you on getting buried under snow....blizzard of '78 was a hell of a time to be a kid, but it wasn't so easy for my mom and dad. I never realized how scared they were until years later. They just didn't make a big deal of it.
I can handle hurricanes and blizzards..but tornados and earthquakes...eek. I will never live in California because of earthquakes. At least with tornados you sometimes get some warning.
And speaking of tornados...where can I get a basement in texas??? I always found it crazy you guys all of fireplaces down here but NO basements...we all had basements up north, but only the rich had fireplaces.
I am lucky if I can find socks for kids in the morning...so you can imagine how much more work we need to do on our emergency plan. But, I know where all the kids and husband are at all times, so that does help.
Yes, BG, I do.
Plan A: When authorities are advocating voluntary evacuation, I'll stay put, , fill the gas tank, take in supplies, tape the windows and weather the storm....unless the electricity goes out for an indefinite time period, in which case I go to....
Plan B: I abandon my anal glaucoma and I DO see my *ss leaving town for far away places.
