TIP: if you download the Google ToolBar, you can use it to check your spelling. It has a spell check function that works with any page with an input box (like this one I'm typing on right now).

I've done that as well. Look back at my errors and think oh shit!
The only thing that would or does concern me is if the spelling or grammar error changes the meaning of what I'm trying to get across. Then I would probably go back and edit or post another comment to clarify.
Udder thenn dat don werry.

It depends. There's the typo or slight mispelling, which I can overlook. There's modern grammar (what my English teacher would call bad grammar), which is still comprehendable. The old rule about dangling participles is antiquated.
Then there's the stuff that is so wrong it obscures the meaning. Using the word "asbestos" without knowing how it is spelled or pronounced, for instance. If you have to guess at the word, the reader has to guess at the meaning. If it weren't for consistancy in spelling and grammar, communication with anyone outside your community would be impossible.
When I correct, it is not because I think you are an idiot. Nor is it an attack to draw attention away from your points. It is simply that I have a preference for clarity. -

I'm a lousy speller when it comes to words that have similar suffixes or are inconsistent with English spelling rules. Like for instant the suffix -able. It can be spelled -ible, too. I can never remember which one to use. And the word judgemental. You leave in the e. Judgemental. On other words like that, you take the e out. Oh and when you add Y to the end of a word that ends in an e, sometimes you take the e out and sometimes you leave it in. Aaaaaaaa! I also am a notoriously bad typist and make a lot of mistakes. I sometimes don't feel like proofreading my posts and have to edit them later.
I find it damned annoying when someone corrects someone's grammar or spelling. Unless it's a goodnatured bit of joking. Especially is it annoying when someone corrects another poster to embarrass them.

That is when I ask them to please be more clear.

Yeah I agree its very annoying, and can be very petty when it is used to avoid the issue being discussed !i'd rather see misspellings than " R " and "U" and "4" type of writings.
Arrrggghh that really makes me cringe! "Don't b L8, r u ready 4 this etc I hate it !

I'm like so what if I ain't the best perfect speller in the world!!!
It was funny on one forum website I was on....the people were so powernoid with spelling that they even had spell check set up, make one slip and even the admins and mods are all over you I got banned there in the end and half the reason was because of my spelling errors
Mods, do you ever wish you could go through peoples posts and fix up their spelling and grammer?

Thanks for the responses. I think it is just about the most annoying thing in the world on internet message boards, to see your spelling or grammar corrected, and I am glad to see I am not alone in my feelings. I know it will still happen and since we all come from different backgrounds and internet activity, it is interesting to see it happens everywhere and in different levels of extremes.

I'll fess up here: as a former English tutor and an avid reader, I notice spelling and grammar mistakes. They bother me. I've pointed them out in the past, mostly in the vein of "your point is invalid and you are obviously an idiot, as evidenced by the fact that you can't even spell correctly!" Then I realized how bloody obnoxious that stuff is, and how annoyed I'd be if anyone did that to me. So, I still notice, and it still bugs me (just as when people I'm talking to in person gratuitously mispronounce words,) but I keep it to myself.
