Here are some pics of my dive in an underground cave system in Mexico. They drive you out into the jungle a ways and you go down a ladder 30 feet underground. There you find yourself on a platform in a cave filled with crystal clear water. Swimming through the caverns was an awesome experience. There were breaks in the ceiling of the cave and the light streaming in from the jungle above was beautiful. Other places were pitch black and we used underwater lights.

Thats awesome. I am going to Cancun in 2 days, do they have caves like that around there? If so how experienced do you have to be to dive them?

    Thanks

The underwater cave system is called Dos Ojos. It's about 30 minutes by taxi from Playa De Carmen. Not far from Cancun. I was diving on the island of Cozumel and caught the ferry over to the mainland.

If you're not a scuba diver you can snorkle through part of the system. You will need a wetsuit. That water is quite chilly. But it is the clearest water I've been in, about 300 foot visibility as it is filtered through the limestone rock.

There were bats in the cave. In the pic where you see my brother and I talking to the dive master, they were hanging from the ceiling and squeaking there. Despite the bats the water was crystal. I imagine the few eyeless/albino fish that live there survive on the bat guano. I saw no vegetation or other food source in the cave system for them.

The water is fresh, not salty. However, there are parts in the system where salt water tries to enter causing a ripple effect in the water called a halocline.

Some of the cavern rooms are quite large. You could put a two or three-story house in them. And there are passageways going off every direction inviting exploration. There is a guideline that runs through part of the system and we followed that. A small number of divers didn't have maps or a guide and have gotten lost in the maze of passageways and died in there.

Yes, you can get to Dos Ojos quite easily. I'm an open water diver with no previous cave diving experience. As I said, you can snorkle through parts of the system if you're not a diver.

We caught these white vans trucking up the main roadway that serve as public transportation there. Very cheap compared to a taxi.

The name of the outfit that I dove with is here. Hopefully this will answer a lot of questions you have as far as location and choices

Thanks for the info it really sounds fun. I have never dived (or is it dove?) before, I have snorkeled in the Fla. Keys several times and loved it. I will have to check into for my trip.

    Thanks

This link is a pic that shows you just how big some of the cavern rooms are and how pure the water is.
