Your gut feeling.

Do you follow it, or ignore it? What experiences do you have following, or not following it?

Every now and then, someone posts something that exposes their gut reaction to something, which could be completely opposite to a position previously taken, or taken immediately after posting it. Should we "pounce" on that gut reflex, quietly bring it to their attention for quiet or private discussion, or ignore it and let them sit with them thinking perhaps no one noticed? Perhaps they don't notice themselves though, or at least didn't notice it was a gut reflex.

I've been reading recently Steve Hassan's book, "Releasing the Bonds" and it briefly discusses that "gut reaction" when people are entering a cult. Talking to Mrs Kwin, when she joined the JW's her gut was telling her "No." but she chalked it up to nerves. I wonder how many others are getting that same gut reflex right now?

I try to go with the flow mate. Take each day as it comes. Whatever my gut feeling, I do.

Since I was raised in the JWs I didn't get a 'gut reaction' for entering. I did however at the age of 7-13 have questions that I couldn't shake or shrug off. When I tried to get answers the response given was never satisfactory. My gut feeling was.. "hey, that doesn't seem right" . But being so young you are told you don't understand everything yet and will when you are older. I just ignored my gut feeling and kept plugging along with what my parents made me to.

About a month ago, I was coming back from having dropped my wife at a wedding shower. On the way back home, I was in the area of my previous employment at Pep Boys. I had tried to get employed at another Pep Boys elsewhere who'd called me. They didn't appear to be interested.

After having a strong urge to go by and say hello to some of my ex-co-workers, the service manager happened to be there. I chanced it upon myself to see if he needed some more workers, he needed someone to fill a couple of positions.

I was hired and started in my old job. It's something I've been shooting for, for quite some time. I ran into my old teacher from college within 72 hours of working there who encouraged me to come in and take the courses for my immisions and inspection license.

It amazes me, often when it is I go with my gut feelings, how many wonderful things have potential for happening. I attribute it to being likened to synchronicity. In fact, I regard it as synchronicity.

Sometimes I follow my gut, sometimes I don't. Unfortunately I often get screwed either way. Sometimes it's not possible to choose a course of action that doesn't have negative consequenses. When I decided to be a JW I had a terrible gut feeling that something was wrong about it. On the other side of the coin, considering the type of life I was living at the time I may not have survived to see my 30th birthday. There's no doubt a drastic change had to be made in my life, but in hindsight I can see how I could have done things much differently.

If my foresight were half as good as my hindsight I'd be doing quite well.

I can't remember my "gut" feeling when first being sucked into the Borg. I was pretty much of a mess at the time and I think my instincts were all screwed up. I'd been put through the ringer in my marriage and my already low self-esteem was nonexistant at that point. I think I expected life, God, the afterlife, everything to be hard and painful. It didn't surprise me, in fact it fed into some sick part of my psyche, that God expected us to please Him by knocking on doors pestering people trying to sell magazines, giving up holidays and birthdays, inviting ridicule and embarrassment, expecting our children to suffer at school and all the other crapola as outlined by the old cranks in the Watchtower.

As time passed, my natural instincts resurfaced and it became harder and harder act in ways that I didn't feel right about. I told myself I was selfish and lazy and disloyal...and I may be those things sometimes...but not for feeling bad about the unnatural way we were supposed to live as JWs. Now adays, if some action I am contemplating or something someone asks me to do bothers me, I pay attention to that feeling. I do try not to shoot off my mouth without thinking first, though I'm not always successful, but mostly I find that listening to my gut and acting accordingly isn't a bad idea.

    (((((Art)))) Cool story,

I should of followed my gut feeling about the jw's, I was a very difficult convert because of unanswered questions and the feeling that when I tested them they failed, but I was rebelling against my parents and family at the time also. On the other hand I made so many bad judgement calls I was affraid this might be right and true and I shouldn't listen to my gut.

As a rule when I follow my gut instinct I do the right thing. Except, I occasionally pop off and my mouth gets me in trouble.
