Well, we just got back last night from our trip to Cancun. We may have to move there some day. You can live in a house, on the beach, in Playa del Carmen (a little south of Cancun) for about $200k. That's disgusting compared to what you would pay for anything in the USA that is situated along a nice shoreline.

We had a blast. Snorkeled everyday we were there. There was a reef about a mile from our hotel(Dreams) that we went to one day. Wow. It was as if you were looking into a 2 foot deep aquarium, but from around 20-30 feet above! Sooo clear. Even at our hotel beach, there were small rays all over the place. Many, many fish to see also.

Stay away from Market 28 in Cancun. No bargains there(at least to Mexico standards). No bartering either. The merchants would let you walk without countering. The price displayed is what you were gonna pay. What's up with that? I guess they feel that with the huge amount of touristas that come through, they figure someone is going to buy. Your best bet is still Tijuana.

The Wal Mart was a trip. I think they have 3 of them in Cancun. We went into the one nearest Market 28(Sam's Club is right next door). It was absolutely the nicest Wal Mart I have ever been in. The seafood section was incredible(they even had a ray on ice). They make their own tortillas on-site. The bakery section was bigger than any bakery I have ever been in and the quality even rivaled Panera's. They had a lot of the same things we have down the grocery aisles. But it is cheaper, even after the conversion. Stopping at Wal Mart was definitely a highlight of our trip.

Tulum was....wow. It is located a little over an hour away south of Cancun near the eco-park of Xel-Ha.(pronounced: shell-ha) No wonder the Mayans lived there. What a view. Iguanas thrive in this area. They are all over the ruins and even on top of the buildings. Fairly tame. You can get up pretty damn close without them running away.

Anyways, enjoy the pics. As soon as I get our underwater cameras developed, I will throw some of those up too.

awesome pictures, sure gives you a lift to take a trip south, eh? Arwen and I and family cruised last year and also just the girls went on an all inclusive. you seem to forget everything going on at home the minute the plane lifts off. We are planning another cruise this winter if all goes well. Arwen will certainly need one after these stressful past and future months. I may never get her off the ship! No one comes a-knock'n at your door on the cruise ships other than "room service"/ not "we were just in the area......" ho ho ho".

Lucky you! I was set on retiring in Mexico ... still #2 choice, until Kevan took me to Hawaii - Big Island. We bought a house in Hilo - no view 6 miles inland 425k! but is a nice place. If finances fall through it might just be Mexico afterall. Goal like that are important. My parents wanted to retire on Hoods Canal, Olympic Penninsula in Washington State. They didn't because "the end was coming soon" and they needed to concentrate on their "work" in Portland. Sad. Sad sad sad. Jourles - go for it! It's never too late, too soon, or a bad choice to plan for your future in Paradise - wherever your paradise is. Hugs Brenda

alt Great pics! Cancun is just a short ferry ride away from Cozumel, the island I like to go scuba diving at.

Will have to see more of the mainland sometime.

This is also a cool place to check out not far from Cancun, the underground cave system Dos Ojos.

Beautiful pics' Thanks for sharing. Looks like you had a fantastic time. Was this your first trip to Mexico? Never been there myself....

Brenda....you have a house on the Big Island? My hubby and I are going there in February. I would welcome any advice or tips as to "must see" spots/ tours/ restaurants! PM me if you like.

Mega, I'm not sure if I've got the brass to do scuba diving. Drowning is my worst fear, and being located 50-100 feet below the surface kind of creeps me out. Not to mention diving down in caves. Snorkeling is right up my alley. I can dive down if I want to and then come back up once the pressure gets to me.

Brenda, I wouldn't mind moving there at all. My wife is hesitant because of the constant heat. I can basically move wherever cell phones work. BTW, this is the longest period in about 13 years where I didn't have a cell phone on me at all times(I work in wireless tele). Every now and then I would reach for my belt line to grab my phone....my wife thought it was wonderful.

Belly, I was raised in San Diego and made quite a few trips to MX during my youth. But as far as vacationing in MX, nope, first time down to the Cancun area.

And talk about weather shock. When we got home, it was raining with the temp climbing up near 50 degrees. Ooooo-waa!
