The one question that still burns in my mind is what does the WTS possibly have to gain by keeping so many people deluded and brainwashed? Does the GB really think they are doing God's work knowing full well that they are nothing but a bunch of liars? How can they, in good conscience, encourage people who will die without blood transfusions do so knowing full well that it's a farce? How can they desuade people from gaining an education and enriching their lives when they know that their "prophecies" and numerical formulas and dates are rediculous speculations? What are they getting out of this? It just doesn't make sense to me and seems like such a waste.

The Watchtower is a money making business. Do they really care about each and everyone's well being?
For every "Quack Organization", there are "Quacks" and "Victims" that join.
It's the "Innocent Victims" that we all care about.

On a personal level it's difficult to admit when one is wrong. At an institutional level it's even more difficult because, in this case especially, one's identity is strongly linked to the institution. To question what the institution professes is to directly question one's very idea of who they are. Not many people are willing to do that, and an institution is incapable of doing it. The people who make up the institution must enmasse question its validity and all arrive at the same conclusion, that it's bs, in order for change to happen. Otherwise no change is possible. Not to question it is to perpetuate its existence, and that's the safe thing to do. So what is gained? The continuance of an impersonal entity which exerts control of its very personal members.

It's a business. It's about money. -

That's what doesn't make sense to me. If all this money comes from the devotees, why encourage them to be poor? The education thing I can understand. By expanding ones mind, one becomes more open to new thoughts and ideas. It helps them to mold the people into believing the rediculous crap that they spew.

Power, control and $$$$$
Does the GB really think they are doing God's work knowing full well that they are nothing but a bunch of liars?
Some really believe that. Others... well the lifestyle with perks is pretty good.

Who said they have a conscience? If they believe they are chosen ones and the policy is right they will see the deaths as martyrdom. if the know its all a farce they can still use it for their propaganda

Ever heard of selective reasoning. The GB has a long history of choosing which facts they will use and which they will ignore. I suspect they have dug themselves in so deep they can't exactly come out and say: "Sorry folks but it is all wrong"
What are they getting out of this?
You are back to your foirst question and the answer is still the same
It just doesn't make sense to me and seems like such a waste

Captives of a concept. There is no doubt in my mind some of those GB members still believe by some stroke of messed up logic that they have the truth and are chosen by God.

Ignorant superstitious people tend to be more likely to work for free for a religious book publishing corporation than an educated rational person. Higher education tends to produce educated rational people who seem not to fall for religious dogmatism very easily. It's hard to get a person to be afraid of the dark when that person knows there's nothing to be afraid of. It's very difficult to control a person who tends to be non-compliant. Educated people tend to be rather rational, and rational people are noted for being somewhat non-compliant to irrational requests made by high control dogmatic religious groups.

I think Poppers nailed it, once an institution reaches a certain level it takes on a life of its own, has sort of an inertia about it that is hard to stop. Also Lady Lees point about digging themselves in a hole, after all the finger pointing at other religions and circular reasoning, there simply is no going back.
