"Watchtower" - Why did Russell REALLY choose that name?

    Interesting...

Yes, some bible translations have the word "watchtower" in them and I suspect that JWs have the idea that the Watchtower magazine serves as a "lookout" and warning for people.

That said, the symbology of "Watchtower", plus the cross and crown, the Golden Age etc. all points to Russell being either a freemason, or simply knowledgeable about freemasonry and / or occult practices.

Freemasons are adamant that Russell wasnt a Freemason. Like you said. Golden Age, Watchtower, pyramids, eye of horus, cross and crown are all Masonic symbols.
Russell was just a try hard, wanna be Mason

From my research I have to offer that a lot of Masonic ritual is steeped in (and elaborated upon) biblical scenes. Many 19th Century Masons were also Christians. It's little wonder that there was some cross-pollination of ideas.

Let's get to the heart of the matter:

Charles Taze Russell was an occultist.

He advocated and practised phrenology. He highlighted and used Egyptian religious symbols. He was obsessed with pyramidology.

He used and emphasized the term "Watchtower" and the "Golden Age" and the Tetragrammaton at a time in history when

these terms were almost exclusively used by prominent occult groups - especially the "Golden Dawn".

Would you eagerly use and display a swastika - and tell your neighbors that 'it's just a symbol for the sun'? Would you display

a hammer and sickle and tell your friends that they're just symbols of labor which you support?

The fact that the Bible occasionally uses the word "watchtower" is no justification for its use in an age in which the word

had powerful occult ( and some would say demonic!) overtones. I might favor socialism on a national basis. Am I

going to portray myself as a "National Socialist"??

The best that could be said about Russell is that he was a 'spermologos' or "chatterer" ( Acts 17) He picked up interesting

scraps of information ( real or imagined ) and tailored them into a religion.

WATCHTOWER - MIZPAH There are 4 Masonic chapters so far in the world that re named "Mizpah" and three of these are in C.T. Russell's area of Pennsylvania. These are all York Rite (Russell was York Rite Knights Templar) R.A.M. - Royal Arch Masons lodges like Russell belonged too. They are Mizpeh Chapter No. 228 R.A.M. of Allegheny, PA, Mizpah Chapter No. 252 R.A.M. Mahonoy City, PA, and the Mizpah Chaper 96 of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar Pennsylvannia. By the way MIZPAH is Hebrew for WATCHTOWER.
