I was just thinking that most of those who were not against porn were once JWs and presumably would have been against it then. Do you think this means that when in a religion people are generally paying lip service to some principles rather than really really believing them or as part of conversion to the world sans JW principles moral standpoints change?

While I was never a JW (and I never posted on the is Porn Bad thread) I believe that peoples views of almost anything can change over time, particularly when the person has been subjected to a barrage of ‘ Porn is bad, porn is bad’.
Sometime later, when, for example, leaving the org, the person starts to realise that there are other views, and maybe investigates those views, they may come to a conclusion such as “Hey! This isn’t as ‘bad’ as I have always been led to believe”. -

I don't think anyone was really supporting porn on the thread. I don't think it was even determined what the poster meant by "porn". As a young JW male, I viewed adult material because I was curious. Then, after leaving the org., I stumbled upon what I consider to be real porn, and I was shocked.

When I was a JW I got my morals from a magazine. Something was bad because the Watchtower - and by extension, Jehovah - said it was bad. Something was good because they said it was good. When I left I had to find a new basis for my morality. One of the main principles I live by now is that anything that involves only informed consenting adults cannot be wrong, even if I personally find it distasteful.

Well, I was brought up JW with all the rigidness and thought even a nude drawing was bad....but some people do pay lip-service. When I was 12 I babysat for a Witness couple (the guy was an elder's son) and was told that if the 3 year old got bored to put a movie in the vcr. So, I eventually found a Wilderness Family movie case, put the movie in...not what I expected to see. I just turned 12 and had no idea what those women were doing to each other
Anyway as others have said...people change--and change a lot after leaving the WTS. I may be a little repulsed by real porn (not talking about naked pictures) but I don't have to look at it...so I don't.

I was a fairly young person when I left the organisation. At that time I had ever really seen a full length porn flick. Viewing porn in my mind is a strictly adult thing to do, since adults have the choice (and hopefully the maturity) of what to view and what not to view. Viewing porn can be abused and reflect problems of self-control and obsession. Thankfully I dont have that problem. Oh yeah we had "Porn Sunday" at church yesterday. That was an eye-opener http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0825/p14s01-lire.html -

I didnt' read the thread you're talking about. However, it occurs to me that when one is oppressed and later becomes free, they may tend to go to the other extreme, at least for a while.

It's not just about porn, or any other single thing, it's about freedom of thought. My views have greatly changed over the past 15-20 years as my mind has become more free.

Qcmbr,
I have not been against porn. Ever. I have felt guilty about porn before I knew better, but I have never been anti-porn.
Respectfully,

I wouldn't regard it as lip service, but I do recognise where I was just conditioned to beat into submission, things that I truly liked, but were not a part of what God's alleged organisation approved of.
Similar, I would imagine to when homosexuals come into the congregation. Nothing changes what your sexual preference is. Just because you become a Jehovah's Witness doesn't mean that you over time come to have an appreciation for the opposite sex. If you were a homosexual before becoming a Jehovah's Witness that chances are that's going to be your desire of choice of lifestyle afterwards, you just no longer have the room to act on that desire.
