The idea that all conclusions are provisional is a working assumption in science. While we often say that it's a "fact" that the earth revolves around the sun, a scientist would say that it's really only a "theory". Of course, it's a theory that happens to have a great deal of experimental support, but it could be proven to be incorrect or (more likely) incomplete, in the future. Ideas that seemed to be just as well established have been overturned in the past. Hubble's discovery that the universe is expanding was probably about on a par with finding out that the earth doesn't revolve around the sun after all.
