    Laborde:

Firstly, let me join with others in welcoming you aboard! Please settle in and enjoy your time here. You'll find that if you do, you'll learn plenty!

Now let me address your post:

Jehovah's witness's use so many books because there is so many things to learn about the bible.
True, but do you see christians attending church with a briefcase full of books so that they can understand what's going on?
Thats like asking why a student needs so many books for college.
I have a problem with that statement. You see, going to a place of worship to praise God is hardly the equivalent of attending college to deepen your knowledge of a field of study is it?
As for the person who said that they need a watchtower in hand, it may have been a new witness who did not know many things about the bible. I personally know many witnesses who can answer any question a person has and tell them the scripture to look up with only using a bible.
But how do we know? All of the talks are basically a presentation of someone else's ideas. Contrast this with pastors and ministers who deliver sermons each week that they have prepared themselves. They don't need an organisation to tell them what to say.
And the books are not sold, they are given out for free.
Well, our learned friend Gumby has blown that one out of the water! So, we're left with lady Lee's question: Why do they need so many books? Well, why DO they?

i remember when new publications came out...the brothers and sisters would read them and get little nuggets out of them ...for example....'the end is coming soon' or 'the end is coming shortley' or 'we are getting close' or 'so close to the end'...on and on it would go....we would read way more into it, than was actually said...

ahhh well, it kept us going

You are not supposed to ask that kind of question. It is going against the F&D slave. They know what is best for us. Just follow the leader.

"Also, we must not only publish books about or in explanation of the Bible; we must also help the Bible readers to understand these Bible-explaining books, …" (The Watchtower Nov. 15, 1961 p.694)

    Welcome to the board, Laborde!!!

Now on to a reply to your post:

Jehovah's witness's use so many books because there is so many things to learn about the bible. All of the information can not be put onto one sheet of paper, it has to be laid out order so that it can be taken in easily.
The Watchtower leaders continually quote scripture verses to prove that what they believe and teach is Biblical. But when they change their beliefs to just the opposite of what they had been teaching and condemn what they used to believe, they proceed to prove this new teaching using different verses from the Bible. It doesn't make any difference what they believe because they can always find some scriptures to support their teaching. Does the Bible really contradict itself that much, or do the WT leaders decide what they are going to believe and then just use or twist verses, or parts of verses, to make it appear the Bible does teach what they say it does. This may explain why they publish so much literrature.

What amazes me is that they can publish two books which are almost identical on the same topic (The Hoily Spirit books come to mind). The only difference between the two books was 1 chapter and one paragraph in the second book was changed from the first. So basically they published the same book twice and got people to pay for it at the hall and then take it out door to door.

Even the books taht are not so similar basically say the same old things again ad again. ad nauseum.

I notice the new machines are far less labour intensive. Thus, perhaps, the lowered demand for Bethelite service.
