Yes The WT relies on people thinking " Gee, I have invested so much in this religion it wouldn't make sense to walk away now".
It's called the "sunk-cost fallacy". Sadly, it works.
once the spell is broken, one you take a deep fresh breath outisde of the watchtower camp, the amazingly obvious realisation becomes clear.... of course this is a lie, of course this is ridiculous!
you find you have memories of really believing the claims and promises, but it seems like another life, another experience.
it seems so incredibly false once you leave and it is very difficult to belive you even once accepted it!

some judged me for going/having gone to university.
some judged me for being 'too smart.
' some judged my non jw brother for being in the army.
I was judged for dressing too sexy by the old biddy man-haters club. I wore smart, but definitely feminine business wear.
In reality I dont' think it was the clothes they had a problem with, it was the body underneath, ( hey, I can't help having roundy female bits!)
I also have a very small heart tattoo on my ankle, they did'nt like that either, ( got so sick of the judgy glares I ended up covering it with a bandaid for meetings).
How I looked and dressed was just the beginning.
of all of the watchtower's many publications dating now to all the way back to russell, which one publication is the most damning in showing they are a complete crachpot of a religion?
and i course, i mean which original publication before they changed a few words and reprinted!.
personally, i think it is probably russell's the divine plan of the ages.
I loathe the Jeremiah Book.
just wondering.. do you agree/disagree with capital punishment?.
are there any circumstances that would justify it?.
or is taking any human life unacceptable, regardless of the crime?.
So should the question be "What is justice"?
Is'nt justice something our internal moral accounting system demands.
So would true justice reflect more of a checks and balances type of system, so they have to live with the consequences of their actions in a way that actually benefits others.
For instance, if you murder someone in cold blood, should you be made to pay money ( say from prison wages) to the victims family for life.
That's just off the top of my head but I figure restitution based justice may change behavior.
Imagine working all day in prison and barely seeing a dime of it because of paying into a victims fund to send the kids of victims to college or some such arrangement.

You raise an interesting point Magnum. You say you could be the executioner, that's interesting.
I wonder, out of how many that agree with executions could actually "flick the switch" themselves.
hello there i am new to the faith and have been studying for about a month.
i am very excited and hungry for the truth and have not missed a meeting or study since the memorial.
we do about 2 bible studies a week.
jnb,
So you have been studying a month and you have already hit a snag- (military service.)
Well, give it time there will be plenty more "snags" where that one came from.
They are just humoring you at the moment because they are grooming you for recruitment into their religion.
Trust me it wont last, to qualify for baptism you will have to part company with all things military and that includes family.
Try asking them some point blank questions about military, YMCA, or what you have to change to get baptised.
Pretty soon the gloves will come off and you will see what's really going on.
Don't trust their "love and friendship" it's conditional on you becoming one of them.

The whole idea of taking life as a business is a bit of a worry.
What method to use, how long it takes to die, weighing up various options.
What sort of people make those kinds of decisions as part of an average workday.
Yet I imagine there are professions devoted to coming up with ingenious and cheap new ways to dispose of people.

Yeah, villagegirl-
Saw that on the news, but the report never mentioned what his crime was or how the execution
had been botched apart from it being lethal injection. Horrible.

Just wondering.
Do you agree/disagree with capital punishment?
Are there any circumstances that would justify it?
Or is taking any human life unacceptable, regardless of the crime?
I
100yrs of kingdome rule?
then why is there not 100yrs of detailed, accurate records?.
maybe it's just me but what were the actual odds of me remaining one of jws?.
100yrs of kingdome rule? Then why is there not 100yrs of detailed, accurate records?

I think counting publishers is misleading (most of those would be offspring.)
Out of all those that get baptised how many stay active/attending, and believing, and on average for how long?
Why? Because if someone sat me down before I agreed to a study and said:
"By the way, we are obligated to warn you that the majority of people that become JWs fail within 10yrs in pretty nasty circumstances. There will be unpleasant and possibly traumatic consequences if you change your mind or make an unforgivable mistake. Which may result in the loss of family and friends and possibly your sanity and your health. You will be essentially marked for destruction from that point on. Do you still want to continue?"
"Well, what were those figures again? 90% failure rate you say?As attractive as all that sounds, I'd like to think about it some more. Don't call me, I'll call you. BuhBye."
The point of all this?
I was probably always more likely to "fail" than I was to "succeed".
That helps in some stange way.
