do the witnesses ever do anything of note to help the common man or do they strictly help themselves?.
What I wanted to state was that as indivuduals, though organized through the WTBTS, many Jws have done a tremendous effort. I think quite a few also did it for unselfish reasons....
I've seen a few JW's who have made an effort to help others, but I feel it is not because of the Organization but in spite of the Organization with the possible exception of the disaster relief efforts. But that's just my opinion.
I mentioned my parents and how they were neglected. However, there were a couple of people in the congregation who did help out a little but not because of any encouragement from the elders. During the seven years that my father and I took care of my invalid mother, there couldn't have been more than 3 or 4 visits from an elder and there was usually an outside reason for it. I think the churches in general do a much better job of taking care of their own.

I see no reason to belittle good efforts nor to praise them as extraordinary as witnesses do. But they at least do help their own.. and whether it is a showcase or not, non-witnesses (relatives and others) benefit, cause efforts by others can then be devoted to others, since witnesses are cared for. I see no need to employ degoratory terms, even though they are witnesses.
Witnesses may help their own in case of natural disasters or if the person(s) are useful members of the congregation. However, I saw personally how my parents (who spent many years slaving for the WT and the local Kingdom Hall) were neglected as they got up in years and were no longer "useful" in the congregation. I've found in talking with others and by being on this forum that this is extremely common. The organization comes first over the needs of the individual members.
i know this sounds crazy however being raised a jehovah's witness gave me the tools of respect for my fellow man.
also my parents had a huge role as well,of course.. i just find today there are soo many twisted people who are amused by the sickest of circumstances and pride themselves on belittling people.i mean i am the first to say.
i love funny sarcasm and making fun of the jehovah's witness religion because i believe in my heart its a crazy cult and way out in left field.
Clyde and I were visiting our son and daughter-in-law last weekend. They have adjusted very well to being outside the organization--have no trouble making and keeping new "worldly" friends.
My daughter-in-law made a curious statement inasmuch as she hadn't been to a meeting in about 3 years. She said, "I'm glad I was raised in the truth." She explained, "If it hadn't been for the 'truth,' I would never have met my husband" (our son). I thought, how true! And I would never have met Clyde.

A couple in our congregation were interviewed at the DC several years ago--probably 30. Similar stuff...three kids either pioneering, serving in Bethel or in the congregation as presiding overseer. Oh how blessed they were!
Today? Two are not going to meetings at all, one has been through two divorces and the other still married but very unhappy. Oh yes, the one daughter who is still going to meetings attempted suicide about 3 years ago--quite mentally unstable. All three of them are struggling financially because they didn't think the system was going to continue.
i was told by my former book-study conductor recently that a new 'dress code' had been handed down by the wts, because people had been 'getting too casual' with their styles of clothing.
one item he mentioed was a new rule for women prohibiting denim skirts.
and, when a woman wore a denim jacket, she was also told this was not appropriate for the kh.
Usually, when people think of denim, they think of blue denim (I think). I bet the elders wouldn't even notice if a woman wore white, brown or black denim.
i am not fully in tune with how the wts defines headship and applies it to the members.

A sister with a UBM in our congregation decided to help her DF'd (married) daughter out who is about to deliver her first baby. The elders got wind of it and counselled her that it would not be appropriate and would be setting a bad example. The UBM raised a ruckus, and the sister is going ahead with caring for her daughter and soon-to-be grandson. At first Clyde and I thought she would knuckle under. Now we wonder what kind of restrictions the elders will put her under for disregarding her counsel. She likes to pioneer a few times a year--maybe they will restrict her from that.
in an earlier thread i spoke of my younger son going to move in with his girlfriend, non jw.
he's 30, baptised, divorced hasn't been to meetings in three years and in good standing.
so, yesterday i had the opportunity to help him move.
Hi NMG - Sorry about your situation. It's a tough one, and only you know the exact circumstances and feelings of your sons. I remember you said that your oldest son is strongly influenced by his wife's family.
I have a somewhat similar situation with my daughter.

Lyman gave a talk at our circuit assembly several years ago, and went way over time (at least 45 minutes). I mentioned it to a pioneer sister when out in service a few days later, and she shot back, "Who are you to criticize one of the Governing Body?"

i've just read raymond franz interesting, revealing and important book.
i wonder if anyone of you have met him or talked to him in person?
I read both books back in 1999. Some people say that ISOCF is too long, but I read every word. Couldn't believe how the scales fell off my eyes, as I came to understand the reason for so many things the WT has said and done. I started going to meetings in 1955 and was a very strong witness--read all publications and attended all meetings--pioneered as much as I could.
When I read an Awake article a few years ago announcing that the Mexican brothers could now use their Bibles and sing and pray at their meetings, I remember wondering why we weren't writing letters to their government like we were asked to do for the Malawi brothers. Franz told us why. I wondered why every history book I picked up never gave 607 BC as the date of Jerusalem's fall. Just thought the historians didn't have their facts right. Franz told us why.
