I remember a few years ago the Awake reported about a tornado that went through Elkhart, Indiana. As I remember, it was reported that everyone who was attending the meeting at the Kingdom Hall were OK, but somebody was killed who missed the meeting that day. I've trying to find the article, but can't locate it. I remember the implication was that Jehovah's blessing was on those who attend the meetings. Interestingly, a few years later there was a mud slide in Mexico(?), and the witnesses flocked to the Kingdom Hall for protection. Many died at the Kingdom Hall--had they gone uphill they would have survived, but they superstitiously believed that they would be safe at the hall. That event really got me thinking. Doesn't the Bible say, "Time and unforeseen even befall us all."?

If anybody can find the article about Elkhart, I would appreciate it.

Universe's 6,000th birthday ...

britain's geologists are about to celebrate the fact that the universe is exactly 6,000 years old.

at 6pm tonight at the geological society of london, scientists will raise their glasses to james ussher, archbishop of armagh (below), who in 1650 used the chronology of the bible to calculate the precise date and moment of creation.

I've seen that date 4004 B.C. somewhere before. Since most of the publications I have read during my lifetime regarding the Bible have been from the Watchtower Society, I wonder if they ever used that date a long long time ago before they came up with 4026 B.C. as the date of Adam's creation. Anybody know?

I looked on the John Ankerburg site but couldn't find where it said that Professor Robert L. Thomas disagreed with the WT on the 144,000 issue. What exactly did he say?

Sorry I wasn't clear. No, they have never said the 144,000 is not literal. I just need some ammunition to show that their argument about the 1,000 year reign being literal, therefore the 144,000 must be (or could be) literal is wrong. Also the argument that since there is a "unnumbered" Great Crowd mentioned, that the 144,000 must logically be literal.

i had posted a few times since my awakening asking how best to talk to my wife about my new take on things.

i was very afraid of handilng it poorly and chasing her deeper into the organization.

instead, she basically said, 'i've been feeling the same way!

Boy are you lucky! My husband realized it was not the truth back in the early 70's, but hung on slightly for my sake until he stopped going to meetings entirely in the early 1990's. I was a very loyal JW although I do remember being a little disturbed by the 1975 fiasco. I hung in there feeling that the "generation" doctrine was still correct. It wasn't until 1998 that I finally faced the fact that it wasn't the "truth." All those wasted years! At one point we very nearly got a divorce. Don't want to go into detail, but it was awful. Somehow he stuck it out even though he was miserable, and he was making me miserable. When I finally saw the "light," I can't believe how it transformed our marriage. I don't know how many husbands would have stuck it out as long as he did. He's quite a guy, and I only wish I could have appreciated him sooner. Maybe I would have if we had the Internet sooner.

My Mother's Being Announced in November As OFF The Pioneer List

after 40 years of serving as a regular pioneer and being on the infirm list, the circuit overseer, the po and another elder told her today in a 30 min.

conversation she was going to be announced as no longer pioneering.

the co mostly talked about me, my wife and daughter.

I sympathize with her. Forty years! I can predict that she will get little or recognition for all the time she spend serving the organization.

Several years ago 2-1/2 years of my life to pioneering for the WT organization. During this period I married and I tried to continue although we only had one car and my husband needed it. At this time I had no pioneer partner and had to depend upon others in the congregation. At that time we reported directly to the Society, we were supposed to get 100 hours per month in, and for about three months I only got 80 or 90 hours in. I was scrupulously accurate on my reports. I was also pregnant. I mentioned this fact when I sent in my monthly report. I heard nothing back until I heard a letter read at the service meeting stating that I had been removed from the pioneer list. I still remember the empty feeling I had as I never heard anything from the Society, and I never heard anything thanking me or commending me for my efforts. After the meeting, a visiting special pioneer came up to me and told lme about a couple in her congegation who continued pioneering even though the sister had a baby. That made me feel even worse.

What I really feel bad about today is that I could have used those years to get a college education, and I almost did, but my witness mentors talked me out of it and encouraged me to pioneer.

I'm almost certain she was a witness at the time of the birth. Does anyone know whether the measles vaccinations back then contained blood fractions? Back in the 1960's we weren't allowed to take even a tiny fraction, and parents were instructed to check with their doctors about whether their children's vaccinations contained any blood.

i've been around for a long time and have seen just about every wt publication--even the hard bound "paying attention to the flock.

" but today someone showed me a manual i've never seen, "shepherd the flock of god.

" it is 8-1/2" by 11", has a spiral binding, and a plastic cover.

Well, thanks anyway. I do believe it may have been put together by a circuit overseer as there is lots of advice for elders.

There is quite a bit on blood, including "Loaded Questions to Watch Out For." and how to answer them It also says you should always consult the elders before seeking medical treatment.

Even though there was a section on "Illness, Family Problems, Unemployment.", I saw nothing whatsoever about taking care of the needs of the sick and the elderly. Just keep preaching!

And sisters have no excuse for missing the meetings even if they have a full time job and their household duties have piled up on them.

I used the term "spiral" notebook. It isn't really spiral. Just don't know the terminology. It is bound on the side by a black plastic device with 19 little "arms" that slide into perforations on the book. That is a terrible description, but the best I can do. This type of binding is real common but I don't know what to call it..
