My husband was counselled for not wearing a white shirt and tie. He was doing volunteer work at the assembly back when we still ran our own cafeterias. It was at the same assembly that the district overseer suddenly appeared with a green shirt. Up until then, for a period of time, the circuit overseer had been refusing to appoint any brother to a servant's position who wore anything other than a white shirt.

Playing games at a wedding shower - is it wrong?
by Bonnie_Clyde inmy daughter-in-law recently gave a very nice baby shower for her cousin.
the next day at the meeting she was called into the library and counselled for playing games.
i asked her what the basis was.

Oh, she was also counselled because the names of the people giving the gifts were read.
BTW, she has been to very few meetings since.
I love her!

My daughter-in-law recently gave a very nice baby shower for her cousin. The next day at the meeting she was called into the library and counselled for playing games. I asked her what the basis was. She said she was too upset to remember but they showed her something from one of the publications. She told me she had three games, and there was nothing suggestive about about any of them. The only thing that could possibly have ticked them off was a game where she put 10 baby items in separate bags, and the guests would feel the bag and guess what was inside. One of the items was a nursing pad. Was that lewd?
I've been around for a long time, and I don't remember ever going to a shower (wedding or baby) where there weren't games. Anybody else heard of this?

Saluting the American Flag
by jeffk378 inthe other day my wife and i were at a function and the naitonal anthem was sung.
my wife wouldnt stand because the society tells her not to.
i think this is disgusting.

When I was in high school in the late 50's, the thinking of the Society was that it was OK to stand for the flag salute because that was not the act of worship. It was the pledge itself that was the act. However, they said the standing for the national anthem was an act of worship and that we should not stand for the anthem. However, it you were already standing for the flag pledge, it was OK to remain standing if the anthem came directly after it. I was a very loyal dub during those years, but I was greatful that I was allowed to stand as it saved me a lot of embarrassment.
I don't know now where I can find those instructions in print.

How many of the public go to the Public Talk?
by truthseeker inif you're still going to meetings, how many of the public actually go to the public talk?
or do you see the same old tired worn faces?.
in my hall, you never see a member of the public just come in and say, i'd like to stay and hear this talk.. was there ever a time when complete strangers would just come in, sit down and actually listen?.

I remember when our congregation would spend a week preaching in outlying areas, rent a room, for example, one time it was a room above a police station, and we would invite the public to the talk. Yes, we handed out lots of handbills and made special invitations. And we did get people to come to the talk. That was in the days when buildings didn't matter. We felt it was the people who mattered not a fancy structure (like the churches).

"How Do We Know the End if Near?"
by Bonnie_Clyde inthat was the talk yesterday.
the speaker started by asking for a "show of hands" of who thought the end was very near?
i was sitting in the back row and believe i was the only one who didn't raise my hand.

Dismemembered - My husband and I chose that screen name because we jokingly call ourselves "partners in crime" like in the movie, Bonnie and Clyde. I'm the only one who posts because my husband can't type.

I forgot one thing the speaker said near the beginning of the talk. He mentioned some woman who had a group of people gathered together because she said the end was coming on March 23, 1986. They were gathered together, naked, and had previously sold their possessions and thrown the money in the streets. The day came and went and nothing happened except she met he own doom. I believe he said one of the disappointed members did her in.
He then asked, would we act irrationally? Those people believed in human predictions of when the end would come and they listened to that imperfect human as to how to live their lives. Don't believe just anything you hear. We need solid reliable guidance. And then he went on to give all the five points on how to survive the end of this system that is oh so close.
That's not the first time I've heard similar stories, making fun of other groups that predicted the end wrong. It never ceases to amaze me they can't see that we have done the same thing numerous times.

That was the talk yesterday. The speaker started by asking for a "show of hands" of who thought the end was very near? I was sitting in the back row and believe I was the only one who didn't raise my hand. Don't know if anybody noticed. Then he spent the next 20 minutes telling how bad the system is, giving quotes from scientists about how much danger we were in. Reminds me of the quote in the "Truth" book about how the world would be too dangerous to live in by 1975.
Now he says the ONLY way to survive the end of this systems of things and to have God's approval is to take the following five steps: (What do you see is missing here?)
1. Develop an obedient heart. He mentioned avoiding immortality, lying, cheating, and misuse of blood. Associate with his Organization through the literature provided and (oh yes) the Bible and be busy in the preaching work.
2. Move from Satan's old world to God's There will be new scrolls opened in the new world in the form of further revelations in written form. We must obey this new direction. We must now obey the WT and the elders.
3. Display true Christian attiutude. Avoid selfish ambition. Do we manipulate Christian principles? What do we talk about. Education or our career? We must be humble. Avoid laziness. Yes, we must spend time at our secular job, but we should devote as much or more time in spiritual pursuits--meetings, field service and study.
4. Be vigilant in prayer.
5. Keep focused on the new world. Jehovah is the only one we can turn to for survival.
Not once - not once did he mention Jesus Christ as the Way, the Truth and the Life. At least last week the special talk was about Jesus Christ. One week later he is forgotten entirely.

A Great WTS Article
by AshtonCA inhey all, i have been doing a lot of research on my own now that i'm no longer in contact with my mother.
i can't believe how much she is still in the 'truth' even though she left 10 years ago.
everything that she has been "learning" over the last 10 years after our departure really isn't any different than it was when we were still in.

Trinity - I have been reading this and other forums for at least six years and I still don't believe in the Trinity. I say it is in the Bible next to the word "Organization" and "Governing Body." I'm not saying I could never be convinced, but not likely. However, I agree that there are a lot of inconsistencies, and this subject is open to a lot of argumentation. Actually, for some reason, I don't care. There are so many other issues that interest me more and perhaps the reason I'm not convinced is because I haven't studied it enough. I spent years and years studying the JW viewpoint and that is a hard one for me to change. Another one I would find hard to change is hell fire.
