If the elders already know what it is, I can't believe there isn't someone on this board who can tell us.

THE BORG WANTS YOUR NUMBER
by Mary inmy elderly dub aunt (who's the biggest whiner the world has ever seen) came over tonight to first of all, whine about how her neighbour shuts her kitchen cupboard doors in the most annoying way possible and her dog barks and what was she supposed to do about it?
anyway, as soon as these monumental problems were solved, she informed me that at the bookstudy the other night, the conductor told everyone to "stay after the prayer" as he had 'something important to announce.
" naturally everyone did this, all the while wondering if the red phone at patterson was in direct contact with jehovah himself as the study was being conducted.

Maybe it's to prepare for the fallout after all those tracts about the end of false religion get placed with the public. It think it's a great way to get some real persecution.

Prepardness and the "Society"...
by Justice-One inyou know the "society" actually has something with this prepardness thing.
they just don't have a clue on what to tell people to do or buy.
i do not want to come off like a know it all, (i'm far from that....i'm still learning) but would anyone be interested in a thread that does not mention firearms (imho they are important, but to much of a hot-button topic) on prepardness?

Clyde and I are also interested.
Ever since we were married, Clyde and I have believed in being prepared--not for Armageddon, but for being self-sufficient in case a local catastrophe causes things to break down. Clyde remembers many power outages in the area where he grew up. We both remember a snow storn where we weren't able to dig out for four days. Clyde says that even a trucker's strike could close the grocery stores in two or three days.
Having extra cans of food on your shelf, if you have room for them in your house, doesn't hurt anybody. They can be dated, rotated and used so that it doesn't really cost extra money in the long run.
The Mormons believe in being prepared, and that is the only reason Clyde and I took the time to talk to them when they came to our house. Don't believe in anything else they teach.
BTW, being prepared in my estimation is NOT the same as hoarding.

Back we had cafeterias at our assemblies, I used to volunteer and we could miss the last half hour or so of the program. I know there were brothers who had more responsibilities who were able to miss out on most of the program. Supposedy, they would attend another assembly to make up for it. Don't know if they really did.
I'm still trying to keep up appearances, so I look up scriptures in my Spanish Bible trying to learn a few new words each time. Guess that's not entertainment, but at least I am doing something worthwhile.

How many times will Jesus be mentioned at the 27 Aug meeting??
The study does mention Jesus one time in paragraph 18: "Jesus is aware of developments in each congregation, just as he was in the first century." (Revelation 1:10,11)
However, I counted the number of times I found the words: Organization, Faithful and Discreet Slave, Governing Body, and Channel of Communication. It is 27 times. So they must be 27 times more important than Jesus.

As I remember, back in the early 70's elders were not under as much pressure. There were not as many offenses for which you could be disfellowshipped, thus fewer judicial meetings. I don't think the Hospital Liasson committees had yet been formed, and there were fewer problems in the congregations, so the elders didn't have quite as much stress to deal with.
I was pretty unhappy about Clyde turning down the eldership at the time (I admit I wanted a husband with a title), but now am so totally thankful. I can only imagine the problems our family would have had because Clyde has always been a bit of an independent thinker.

Remember the Written Review
by 30girl inwhat exactly was the purpose of the written review?
it was extremely helpful that the society warned you on the calendars which night you had to skip... we had those boards that they passed out so you had a good writing surface, often covered with witness grafiti like, jesus or jehovah or something biblical.
remember the little grading sheet on the back; excellent, very good, good -- was there a poor?

I also remember having to turn the written review back into the conductor. Then he would hand them back at the next meeting with the score at the top. He would even mentioned the highest score although he didn't give a name. I never minded them because I did a lot of studying back in those days and usually scored quite well.

Clyde turned down the opportunity to be an elder on two occasions. The first time was when the elder arrangement first started back in 1972(?) When he first heard about the new elder arrangement he was pretty excited. But after the second meeting where they were selecting the elders, he became very disillusioned. He came home that night and told me that it had almost become a popularity contest. He told me he wanted no part of it--that he took the responsibility too seriously.
They gave him a pretty hard time about it, and I believe this was probably the first crack in his faith. Clyde saw the truth about the truth a long time before I did. I'm ashamed to say I didn't make it any easier on him.

Scripturally Free to Remarry?
by limbogirl inhad a discussion with a friend of mine yesterday -- she's still semi in the borg.
anyway, she says she's free to remarry as defined by dub rules.
she's divorced, however, there was no cheating by either party in the marriage.

Our son divorced his wife a few years ago because she admitted to adultery--but she only admitted to him. Later she told the elders that she had lied. So they told our son he was not free to remarry. But one of the elders took my son with him in his car and stalked her apartment way into the middle of the night, and sure enough, they found evidence that she was with a man. That made our son free to remarry, but he didn't have anyone in mind.
About four years later his old girlfriend divorced her non-witness husband on the grounds of adultery. Her husband had actually moved his new woman into their home, and of course our son's old girlfriend moved out. The gir's parent's (both good witnesses) testified to the elders that this man was living with another woman. Can you believe this? They required that the parents write a letter to the elders and sign it before their daughter would be free to remarry our son.
Happily our son and new daughter-in-law stopped attending meetings about a year ago.

Back in the 1960's a frail elderly woman was baptized (I believe in her late 80's). Later on she was disfellowshipped. An elder later told me it was because she preferred the King James Bible over the New World Translation. I remember visiting her in an assisted care facility and her telling me of her hope of going to heaven. Unfortunately, I mentioned it to the Congregation Overseer. I have often wondered if that was part of the reason.
