We still have everything. If we ever move, we would probably get rid of it, but it's stuck away in a closet I don't use anyway.

1932-1971 how was the congregation run?
by pirata inthe arrangement for body of elders and deacons / minsisterial servants existed pre-1932 (democratically elected) and post-1971 ("theocratically" appointed).. are there any here who remembers how things were run from 1932-1971?
i see mention of the "congregation overseer" and a committee of men to carry out his instructions, but not too clear on much beyond this.
did the congregatino overseer pretty much run the show and make all the decisions?

Just my observation--in our area. When they started the elder arrangement, more men became interested in becoming witnesses as that gave them the chance to attain a position of importance. Often, UBM's decided to join their wives at the KH. I felt that after the elder arrangement started, the ratio of men to women increased quite a bit--although they were still in the minority.
My father was one of those men. He managed to work his way up to elder although to this day I don't see how he qualified.

December 15th WT gives example of sister who quit her job so she could go to an convention.
by life is to short ini was beyond mad when i heard this.
it is on page 30 of the wt.. it says "a pioneer named roxana is one who has seen how jehovah provides for his people.
when she asked her employer for permission to take some days off to attend one of our conventions, he angrily retorted that if she went, he would fire her.

This brings back memories. In the 1960's Clyde quite his job so he could attend the district convention. Back then it was easy to get a new job. Not so today--especially in the area we live.

District Assembly Dramas - where the heck do they come from?
by babygirl30 indespite growing up a jw i was always curious where this corny plays came from?
my best memories of them were when they used to turn the lights out in the convention center - cause that meant i could sleep!!!

Anybody remember the "Joseph and his Brothers" drama from the early 70's? That's the only one we were in (I should say Clyde). I believe the drama was about showing forgiveness. Clyde played the part of "Dan", and we thoroughly enjoyed the drama--except for one thing. Clyde decided to grow a real beard instead of using one of the fake beards. He looked great in his real beard but they asked him to shave it before the assembly. To keep the peace, he complied.
Like Blondie said, I think they used to stick closer to the actual Bible account as we could just about follow along in the Bible.

The second factor to remember when
we are faced with a situation that appears to
be unfair is that our viewpoint may be distorted
or limited. It can be distorted by imperfection,
prejudice, or cultural background. It is
also limited by our inability to discern motives
and to know what is really in people’s
hearts. In contrast, both Jehovah and Jesus
have no such limitations.—
The WTS and many elders don't think they have these limitations either.

Weak JW Commits Suicide, Elders Reluctantly Have a Memorial at the Kingdom Hall
by OnTheWayOut inso my mother calls me on thanksgiving thursday and tells me about a fellow in her kh that i knew quite well.
he grew a beard years ago and stopped field recruiting, but kept going to the kh several times a month as his wife was still active.
the elders never really tried to show concern for his depression, but always bugged him about the beard.

wow, this is news to me. back in the '90s, there was no kingdom hall funerals for inactive, suicides....it had to be done at a rec center or somewhere, and there was the compassionate, yet reluctant elder who had to stick his neck out and probably got a hand slap for doing the service.
Yes - In 1997 my cousin was a well-known elder who had moved with his family to a remote congregation where the need was great. He had a bad reaction to some medications he was taking and committed suicide. The funeral could not be at the Kingdom Hall, despite all the years of service he had given the organization. He had even pioneered the same month that he took his life.
Rotten doesn't even describe it.

Fred Franz: Time in Which We Are Now Interested -- 1975 lecture
by cabasilas infrom internet archive:.
"time in which we are now interested," lecture given by frederick w. franz on february 5, 1975 at the los angeles sports arena in los angeles, california.
this was a special lecture given by fred franz (then vice president of the watchtower society and one of the main theologians of jehovah's witnesses at that time) on the 6,000 year chronology that pointed to the year 1975 as a special year marked in bible prophecy.

The expected events for 1975 would be delayed by the "interval of time" between Adam and Eve's creation as the start of the "Seventh Creative Day" did not begin until after Eve was created.
That's exactly what a circuit overseer told me in 1957--nine years before the Society began the 1975 teaching. I was a young teenager, and I asked the CO about the 6,000 years and if we added that to Adam's creation in 4026 B.C., wouldn't that bring us to 1975? If that guy had the "correct" understanding back in 1957, how come Freddy didn't figure it out untl 1975? And Freddy was "annointed!"

do you miss anything from when you were a jw?
by Newborn ina few of my friends who also used to be jw's, say they miss certain things abt it...i can honestly say that i don't miss a single thing (my sister obviously who's still in but nothing else).. before i could sometimes miss having such a strong belief but that's also gone.
i guess i've moved on big time.
/newborn.

Only thng I have missed is knowing that I had the "truth." Now I ask the question that Pilate asked Jesus 2,000 years ago, "What is truth?" I've decided to stop thinking about it and just live my life.
I do miss association with my still-JW daughter, but can't go back to the "lie."

Latest Special Talk in Australia
by jwfacts inno, i don't mean the visit by oprah.. there was a special talk on sunday relayed to all the aussie congs from sydney.
apparently the speaker had an american accent, but was stationed in a latin american country.
he was really pushing field service and pulled out the old one that: if you do not witness you are not one of jehovah's witnesses.

I am surprised that Oprah has not done a show on disfellowshipping. I am sure she would care about the destruction of families. Even if it was to showcase children from a few high control religions, instead of just JWs.
Sally Jesse Raphael did just that several years ago (at least 20). The woman she interviewed had been in a congregation that I used to attend. Everybody I knew was just shocked (including myself) that she would do such a thing, telling the world how her family refused to talk to her because she divorced her husband and married her high school sweetheart. A few years later I saw her at a circuit assembly, and she was reinstated--another surprise. Apparently, it was just too much for her--not to see her children and grandchildren. Have never seen her since, but I don't go to assemblies any more.

2010 Partakers number is out!!!
by Hairyhegoat inhey here we go!!!.
they will need to buy some more crackers and cheap wine for next year now.
what are the borg going to concocked now to cover there ass with the number of morons going up again at the memorial 2010 ?.
-
Bonnie_Clyde
Since many of the partakers are probably fake, and those who are not fake are not important anyway, why don't they just show a video of the governing body partaking of the emblems on Memorial night and let it go at that?
Bonnie_Clyde:
WTF: Since many are fake?
You certainly must have meant, "since all of them are fake"
Oh yes - ldrnomo - you and I know they are all fake. But the explanation most JW's would give is that "many are fake"--that explains the increase of numbers.
