The idea that the congregation was a haven full of people giving unconditional love made me feel special...until I realized it was conditional love.

Divergent is a more complicated "1984", but still could perfectly describe cults
by ILoveTTATT ini just watched the movir divergent and all i could think about was how similat it was to describing cults.
instead of being a black and white "us vs them" it's more of a multicolored cult vs cult vs a "overlord cult"... phrases such as "faction over family" and "we can't run the risk of everyone thinking on their own" (that one was paraphrased) brought chills to my spine.... it's such a good movie!!
i really recommend it!.

It looks entertaining, not sure my husband would be up for paying movie theater prices for it though. We rent more than go to the theater.

Do any ex JW' s/ God believer's, Agnostics or Atheists believe in Karma? And WHY?
by rip van winkle injust reading a thread and the mention of karma popped up.
( it happens, lol).
a lot of people believe in karma: what goes around comes around.. some months ago, while on another exjw site, karma was mentioned and i thought it a little odd, as they are atheist.

I like the idea of karma. Do good and good will happen to you. But I don't believe in it.
I think people throw that word around without really meaning it or thinking about what it really means.

Rewarding system
by alwaysthinking inalways go to meetings------lots of points.
pioneering------lots of points.
marrying to a jw -----lots of points (happy or not, who cares).

Don't forget commenting as much as possible and telling others after meeting how much you appreciated their comments. Noting someone wasn't at the last meeting and exclaiming over how good it is to see them again gets max points.

Profiling of an apostate
by joe134cd ini must admit when i was in, the idea i had of an apostate, was an angry bitter person who would picket out side a convention.
i was looking on jwservey and found on the respondents to a servey that 54% were either active members or fading members.
this made me wonder is the organisation underestimating the extent of apostasy.

My understanding is as long as you don't voice your 'doubts' to anyone, you're not an apostate. As soon as you say anything to anyone (even the elders) in the congregation, you are considered an apostate.
The members of the congregation will likely start to treat someone like an apostate with very little evidence. Some take keeping ‘clean’ to the extreme. Not professing your love for the truth and your gratefulness to the FDS is enough proof for some.
I’m at the point where I spout the lines and keep my thoughts to myself. Well, I do bring some things up to my husband. Turns out he agrees with most of it. He says he knows everything isn’t correct, but believes eventually it will all get fixed and he’s content to wait. (He's a born-in JW, 3rd gen.) So I wonder if he stated that opinion to the elders if he’d be in trouble (apostate!) or congratulated on respecting the theocratic arrangement?

Born-In Girls--Did You Have a Doll at KH
by Band on the Run inwhen i was preschool, i had several dolls.
meetings were so hard at that age.
in fact, they were agony my entire life.
-
rayelynnlee
I have never seen a doll in the KH. A worn copt of my book of bible stories and a notebook to doodle in is all I've seen for little kids.
I feel like there's a spotlight on me if I have bottle of water in the hall, nevermind a coffee cup Saturday morning. It's so weird.

What was your mild superpower?
by sparrowdown ini am in awe of the level of intelligence, wit and funnybones that alot of you posess.. which made me wonder, did you have a mild superpower while you were in?
for instance was it giving talks, commenting, research?
maybe it was pissing people off (a much underated skill).

I was great at talks (no 2). After my first talk the guy in charge of the school actually asked if I had ever done acting in school or anything, I was that natural on stage. It took all my self control not to tell him I acted every time I was in there...
