I doubt they set out to deliberately use those tactics, but they certainly have become very good at manipulation....

The bOrg Cult Tactics
by pale.emperor ini'm wondering if the borg actually studied mind control and coercion tactics deliberately or wether they just evolved over time through trial and error.
from reading steve hassans books, studying hypnosis and methods psychopaths use it all seems very complex.
like it would never occur to me to do a, b and c in the right order at the right time in order to get control of someone or control their lives.. for example, repetition of words (the word "loyalty" was a big one in the last convention), using loaded language, encouraging people not to trust their own thoughts, restricting their information, demonising those who leave etc.

Adult survivor of sexual abuse as a child
by life is to short ini showed the video from the midweek meeting of september 12th to my counselor to get her take on it.
she said that it clearly was a propaganda video and was appalled that it was shown to an audience that had small children in it.
she said that they could have been way more generic in their way of portraying the women as having been abused.. the subject of sexual abuse and the way the video zeroed in on it would have small children asking questions that really did not need to be addressed.

Yes!
I also showed a counsellor the video.
She was disgusted at the manipulative nature of it!
The way they cherry picked some points and obviously excluded other more important issues was terrible. (For example, no mention was made about a victim seeking counselling)

Once again, here is an example of the micro management the society demands over the PERSONAL decision of its members!
And they say they are NOT a cult?!

Oct 2021 Time Capsule
by LevelThePlayingField inwhat do you think the jw religion will be like in oct 2021?
if we go back five years from oct 2016 you get 2011. there was no jw.org, really pretty much no tablets, most people were using paper copies for everything.
now that's all changed.

Who knows!
But one thing is for sure, as the opening post pointed out, the changes will be huge compared to current things.
5 years has seen monumental differences in the society.....

Oh the irony! The elder, a car accident, and me....
by stuckinarut2 inoh this is just worth sharing!.
so , as many know, it has been two years since i have attended any meetings, conventions, etc....nothing...cold turkey.. the hassles and problems the elders threw our way were monumental....so many details i could share, but suffice it to say, we stood firm and kept our dignity and poise and reminded them of "appropriate boundaries ".
one elder in particular has since spared no effort in ensuring that malicious gossip and slander has been spread so that witnesses have avoided us like the plague!.

Thanks for your comments all!
Honestly, I stopped to help because it's what I would do even if I was still an active witness...and there was no desire to prove a point to him or anything....but it does amaze me that I will still be spoken of poorly as a PERSON amongst witnesses...

"Coping with Shunning" by Barbara Anderson
by AndersonsInfo inhttp://watchtowerdocuments.org/coping-with-shunning/.
by barbara anderson.
when my husband and i left the religion of jehovah’s witnesses (jws), we, like countless others, lost family members and friends because of the witnesses shunning doctrine.

Lovely thread and comments.
The society tries to tell people that it is NOT a cult. However, conduct such as this proves that it is indeed displaying cult-like behaviour when a group of men who don't even know us personally tell family members not to associate.
This attempt at emotional blackmail is inappropriate behaviour.
Stay strong and see that there is such as thing as honesty and dignity. A sincere love of TRUTH is what has driven most to leave the society...and that is priceless!
Love to you guys!

Hi all,
Thanks for your replies!
A few questions were raised by ones here:
Is the "we" and "us" referring to my wife and I? Yes. We are both out, and while I respect my wife's journey may be a little different to mine, she does see the society more for what it is. In fact she used the expression in a conversation "that was when I used to drink the cool-aid" a while back!
Also, Island man's idea of how it could be spun in an "experience" is fantastic! I can see that happening now! Funny.
Oh someone asked "if this good account of me would have been spread as well amongst witnesses"? Well, I know for a fact that the field service group who were out the very next morning were talking of the families accident, but NO comment was said about the fact that I helped them. The one brother who still talks to me was keenly telling me the account of their accident until I said "yes, I know...I was there" (and told him the rest). He said "we didn't hear about you". In fact that group of witnesses walked right past my home that very next morning while doing the territory! I was in the front yard gardening, and NO ONE even looked over...
Oh and others asked "what if the roles were reversed?" Well, many will have seen my post some months back that I was on the side of the road, and a carload of witnesses I have known for decades drove right past!

Despite the fact that we are kind, generous and caring people, the elders have attempted to malign us at any opportunity...and I'm not being paranoid...trust me....it's real.
Seriously, if anyone wants to know more, let me know....
But, the other week, quite randomly, i was driving and came across a car accident! It had just occurred, and I recognised one of the cars: that elder and his family! So without hesitation I stopped, and genuinely atttended to them, and despite his look of shock on his face, I offered any help they needed, including transporting the family and offering to help with the aftermath.
I genuinely did not act in order to prove a point, nor be smug or whatever. But it did make me wonder whether he feels bad for maligning my name or spreading gossip for two years?
Remember, this is someone and his family I have known for decades. Someone I have been close to and genuinely liked. I didn't change as a person simply because I found out disturbing things about the society. No, but they changed...they took it personally and made out that I was evil.
Maybe they will see that true human kindness is not dependant on whether someone is a witness?
What did Jesus say about the Good Samaritan? Wasn't it someone NOT from the same faith, but rather an "apostate" that showed compassion?
