Discussing movies at work this week, someone mentioned "Sin City", a very violent film about honest cops, corrupt cops, and criminals. In this film, justice is administered harshly, and sometimes cruelly. However, the film also shows really evil people receiving "just desserts". Our resident JW stated that "his family doesn't watch any film with an 'R' rating, whereupon I explained that I had seen the film under discussion, and it wasn't any worse than Old Testament violence. I then asked him if he had "My Book Of Bible Stories" for his children. He confirmed that he did, and I asked "So how is it wrong for people to be shot or cut in a film, yet you give your children a book with women being pushed out of windows to be eaten by dogs"? So, what rating would you expect "My Book Of Bible Stories" to receive?

Any Oldtimers from Bethel in the 1960s??
by Gretchen956 inanyone old enough to have been in bethel during the 60s and early 70s?
in my family i have an uncle that was there then, we were always told he was higher up, but that could have been that he was a supervisor or almost anything, who knows.
at any rate, when i was younger he went "apostate," and left bethel and the witnesses in some splashy manner.

Gymbob, did you know either Tim Sparck or Bruce Dozier, both from Corpus Christi, Texas, who were there during your time? After they returned home, they were in congregations I attended. When I was young, they were viewed by many in the congregation as just a step lower than angels because they had "served at Bethel".

Haven't read the 1920 book, but not sure it would even be relevant today. Too much has been learned SINCE then about how the Bible was written and edited, and even more about Biology, Geology, DNA, etc. If someone insisted on creating a dichotomy in which someone had to choose only the Bible and its creation story, or Evolution, I'd say the Bible would lose.

If SATAN could offer you something desireable, would you accept it?
by JH inif it was possible for satan to offer you something desireable, knowing that god wouldn't approve of it, would you accept it anyways.. now, if you don't believe in god, you won't believe in satan either so this question doesn't apply to you..

I actually don't buy into the whole "fallen sinful human race" idea as an explanation for why we die. Humans are no more "built to live forever" than any other animal. All animals, at least those which are multicellular, eventually die. What sin was the rest of the natural world supposed to have committed as an explanation for why they die? Science has a better explanation, in that as cells are replaced, errors are made in the replication. When cells are replaced enough times, eventually, enough of these replication errors add up so that the body cannot function any longer. The beauty of this explanation is that it can be tested, and it explains why both animals AND humans age and die, without invoking some supernatural cause.

There are two sides to every story, and I would at least listen to Satans side, so as to make an unbiased decision. Given that the Genesis account says that Satan was truthful with regard to Adam and Eve becoming "like God", I would at least consider the offer, although I might or might not actually accept it.

by greendawn inwhat are your favourite biblical verses?
even some ex jws may have become atheists but may still be fascinated by some.
someone told me his favourite verse was "thou shalt not go hungry", he was always out of work and liked stealing, but according to him this was one of the commandments given to moses.

Greendawn, it simply isn't scholarly to make sweeping generalizations such as you made about pagans. Your post would be more convincing if you could cite specific instances. Specifically WHICH pagans do you claim burned animals alive, or used women "like objects", etc? History shows that Christians often burned those they didn't like, such as Joan of Arc. You may have heard of the Israelite general Jephthah, who vowed that if God gave him a victory, he would offer the first one out of his house as a BURNT OFFERING? He kept his vow even though the first one out turned out to be his DAUGHTER. Read all about it in Judges 11. Many of the pagans in Greece and in the Roman Empire offered grain sacrifices to Demeter, Ceres, or Isis. Many also treated their women vastly better than the Israelites did. Both Egyptian and Scandanavian women could divorce their husbands if they didn't feel they were treated well, while rape victims in Israel were compelled to marry their attackers. Although not common, SOME religions (for instance, some Dionysius cults) did practice human sacrifice until Rome outlawed the practice everywhere in the empire in the third century B.C.E., You seem to forget that Christianity is based on the sacrifice of one particular human, said to be sent by God for that specific purpose, and who, according to the accounts, suffered in agony for hours or possibly even days and died miserably asking "Father, why have you forsaken me?" How is THAT better than any of the pagan sacrifices which had already ended centuries before? The correct answer is "It ISN'T better in any way". I suggest you study a bit of history regarding pagans, I'll give you two good titles to start with (1) A History Of Pagan Europe, by Jones and Pennick, and (2) Pagans and Christians, by Robin Fox. I'm sure you will find that either title will prove illuminating.

Jeremiah 44:16-18 "As for the word which you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we will not listen to you. But we will do everything that we have vowed, burn incense to the Queen of Heaven, and pour out libations to her, as we did both we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then we had plenty of food, and prospered, and saw NO evil. But since we left off burning incense to the Queen of Heaven, and pouring out libations to her, we have lacked everything, and have been consumed by the sword and by famine."

Just wanted to clear up a couple of points...first, internal combustion engines emit both CO2, CO and nitrogen compounds at the same time, because the engine is not breathing pure oxygen, but atmosphere, which is roughly 78% nitrogen. IF combustion in the cylinder were perfect, and the ratio of fuel and air were perfect, then only CO2 and nitrogen compounds would form. However, during combustion there is always more carbon than there is oxygen available to just form CO2, so some forms CO instead. Modern engines with computer controlled fuel injection are better than older, carbureted, engines, but there is still some CO formed. Also, not to be pedantic, but Venus is not actually a gas giant. Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus are gas giants, much larger than Earth, but with low densities. Venus is a rocky planet almost identical in size and density to Earth. Despite being nearer the Sun, Venus could possibly have been habitable, were it not for the extreme greenhouse effect which creates a thick atmosphere, extremely high barometric pressure, and a surface temperature of approximately 800 degrees F.
