I have used Caldera, SuSE and Mepis Linux, as well as PC-BSD with some success, Mepis for the longest. However, I found Mepis INCREDIBLY difficult to configure for a new soundcard I installed, I went online and asked for help on forums, etc. Experts offered suggestions and nothing worked on a supposedly supported soundcard.
I eventually decided that whatever benefits existed were not worth the hassle, so downloaded BeOS PEMax from bebits.com, it was and is so much better is isn't even funny. I've been using it now for more than five years. There is no known virus yet written for BeOS, perhaps because it is rather obscure. You can use Firefox as your browser, and BeMail or Thunderbird for your email client. BeOS works similar to Windows or most Linux distros, but shares no basic DOS or Unix legacy, instead was created from a clean sheet of paper in the 1990's. There is a newer version called Zeta which works well on newer computers.
Work is quite far along on a new version called Haiku, the pre-Alpha versions can be downloaded from haiku-os.org I've not yet tried any of these, but they are intended to be binary compatible with the older versions of BeOS.
So, if you have an older computer, try BeOS. If you have something newer, try Zeta or if you are adventurous, try Haiku.

Is it wrong to burn people to death?
by DoomVoyager ini'm an avid reader of steve wells' blog on religion and atheism.
this article discusses the hebrew god (we all know him as joe hoobie) and his propensity for burning people to death.

I support capital punishment, because some people simply cannot and will not ever be rehabilitated. They cannot safely mingle with society. Since we are talking about people who can't and won't change their ways, they are a danger to the rest of society. As a protection to society, the most merciful thing to do is to execute them in the most painfree method possible.
To burn someone to death would be inhumane in the extreme, as the amount of pain is very high, and death does not come quickly. However there are other forms of execution in which whatever suffering takes place is over very quickly, and some forms in which there is little or no suffering.
Believing that "God" is going to step in some day is an old, old argument to induce naive believers to accept a less than ideal life now and for the foreseeable future, in the vain hope that someday, it will get better.
We don't have to think that way anymore. We can make our lives better NOW. No need to wait on a fictional God who will *never* take action. -

Faders: When You Left, did Anyone Give a Damn?
by shamus100 init seems funny to hear how some get love bombed, others get left alone when they fade.
i moved and told nobody - by the time they figured i was 'weak', it was too late - i was gone.
so honestly, what was it like for you when you left the 'organization'?

I gradually began missing meetings, then stopped altogether. For a while there were invitations to go out in field service, local needs on the service meeting directed at me, and eventually, inquiries "why have you stopped attending"?
When I moved, my landlady, a sister in the congregation, had a "going away party" and perhaps a dozen or so people showed up. When I went back to visit the town on vacation a few years later, I visited her, and she organized another "party", however this time, only two people could be bothered to attend. -

Do the JW's really and truly believe that the end is near?
by TooBad TooSad inif the jw's really believe what the witchtower babble and trick society says about.
the end being so close, do their actions betray what they preach?

A brother I used to know, actually an elder in the south Texas congregation I attended, went to a great deal of planning and expense to build a custom house, not just a house but a DOME-shaped house. He did this back in the late '70s or early '80s, apparantly thinking he was going to live in that house a long time. As it turns out, he did!
He and his wife also had a beautiful daughter who, of course, would "never finish school", who, as it turns out, probably has by now. -

JW's unwritten dress code and personal appearance standards-FROM WHERE?
by Thechickennest inone thing that always use to puzzle me was the personal appearance standards, espessially for meetings and service.
the men always were expected to where a tie, suit, jacket, etc.
no beards were allowed-mustaches were ok!

It seems that at one times, brothers were allowed to wear shirts other than white, and jackets did not absolutely have to match pants. I recall seeing many brothers give talks wearing, for example, a courderoy or wool tweed jacket, some nice but non-matching slacks, and a shirt and tie. Sometimes the shirt would be a complimentary color to the pants.
I tended to dress in styles not approved even then, and was "counseled" more than once because some brothers were, "distracted". I'm sure I would not have been allowed to tour bethel.
In recent years, there appears to have been a movement toward a conformist dress code, in that the "rules" have been tightened up, hence, now brothers are expected to wear matching coat and pants, white shirt only, etc.
I believe this is their response to what they see as "gay influence" in popular culture. Because "the world" is so "evil", any blurring of gender identities is an indication of Satans influence. Therefore, they work to maintain very distinct gender identification by means of stricter dress codes, i.e. no slacks on women, no bright colors on men, etc. -

When has Science Ever been proven wrong by the Bible?
by gaiagirl inthe watchtower sunday made a claim to the effect that when science conflicts with the bible, the bible has always been proven to be correct.
if i had been there, i would have asked "could you provide some specific examples"?.
i'm thinking that reality is actually the other way, science always disproves the bible.

Which branch interests you the most? If you are interested in stars and planets, the history of the universe, etc, then you must watch the PBS series "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan. Its available on VHS and DVD for purchase from places like Amazon, or even to borrow from many libraries. "Cosmos" also touches on other branches of science, including biology, genetics, ancient history, evolution, atomic physics, however it deals with these in a very approachable manner. Highly recommended!

"Corrupt" music video, could this apply to freedom from WTBTS?
by gaiagirl inheard this song by becky baeling, and thought how it works on more than one layer.
on the surface, it is just about a woman seducing a man, but below that, it can be about being freed from chains of bondage to a society which is in itself corrupt.

Is there any Religion WITHOUT a belief in an afterlife / reward?
by ThomasCovenant init's been interesting to read the various discussions that go on here particularly between those who 'believe' in a 'god' and those who don't.
in my opinion when all is said and done it seems to come down simply to.

For Unitarian Universalists, there is no official teaching with regard to what happens after the body dies. Members are encouraged to learn about many different views, and to believe whatever is the most meaningful to themselves. There was a song played recently in the local congregation in which the verses were about the different things people believe, while the chorus basically said "since we can't be sure, I'll just let the mystery be".
To UU's, the important thing is NOT what happens after a person dies, but what a person does while this life lasts, not only achieving good things for themselves, but actions taken to make the world better for everyone.
