What did you do as a child (or adult) to survive boredom during meetings?
by Wasanelder Once inwhat did you do as a child (or adult) to survive boredom during meetings?.
as a child i remember sitting behind a sister with a pink angora sweater.
i would pull of a bit of the lint from it and tilt my head back and place it above my lips a bit.

I would frequently attempt "out of body" experiences, and got to the point that, whether or not I really went anywhere, I may as well have been gone. Other times, simple things like crossing my legs and flexing my thigh muscles helped meetings pass much more quickly.

Not sure about Eve, but Adam looks a lot like Hugh Hefner.

Demon Haunted World
by jstalin inhas anyone here read demon haunted world by carl sagan?
what a great book.
he lays out the requirements for using critical thinking, and then debunks a bunch of bs - like ufos, esp, etc.

I agree, Carl is sorely missed. That, and his other books, are simply magnificent. Most of his detractors don't attempt to refute the rational arguments he presents, so they appeal to emotional hotbuttons instead.

What sort of symbiotic relationships do you have?
by AK - Jeff insymbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of two (or more) different species.
sometimes a symbiotic relationship benefits both species, sometimes one species benefits at the other's expense, and in other cases neither species benefits.
ecologists use a different term for each type of symbiotic relationship: .

If a car were a living thing, most people would have a symbiotic relationship with it. The human works to own the car, spends money to operate and maintain it. The car provides convenient and rapid transport for the human. Some "cars" carry very heavy loads and large bulky objects for their humans. As for actual living creatures, I have fish and newts which I enjoy caring for. They live in a small "universe" insulated from the outside world, and their needs are met. I "benefit" by enjoying them, although they don't really do anything practical, unless the relaxing effect they provide is considered.

Saturday Night Live did an amusing parody, called Brokedown Goldmine, (or something similar). It involved Alec Baldwin and Will Forte as two grizzled old prospectors acting as if they had very special feelings for each other, i.e. "I haven't found any gold yet, but I found something so much better" (in wheezy old prospector voice).

What do you feel is truly and absolutely IMPOSSIBLE?
by AlmostAtheist ina friend of mine told me tonight that he believes something is impossible.
this happens to be a something that i feel is not only possible, but 100% proven beyond all doubt.
interesting.

There are things that simply cannot happen because they defy the laws of physics, and then there are things that are merely beyond our technological capabilities at the moment. In 1885 or so, Lord Kelvin claimed that "heavier than air flying machines are impossible". Yet, within 18 years, they were a reality. Sufficiently advanced technology allows people to do things which would have been attributed to gods in earlier times. So, some things will never happen, such as already mentioned, reaching a temperature below absolute zero (because you cannot remove heat from something which has NO heat remaining). Similarly, there is a maximum vacuum which can exist, and no greater. Other things, such as time travel, especially into the future, MIGHT be possible with application of a very large technological lever. It is believed that travel into the future is going to be easier than to go backwards, and it may in fact prove impossible to ever return.

Abortion
by Ellie in.
i don't know if any of you brits saw the 'this morning' show today but they had a woman on it whos mother had tried to abort her at 7 and a half months pregnant, apparentely they gave her mum some stuff to drink which burns the baby inside and out, but fortunately this baby survived and now as a woman she is campaigning for anti abortion laws to be brought in.. so, what are your views on abortion?

Its time to stop trying to control womens lives based on the primitive beliefs of people who have been dead for more than 2000 years. A developing embryo requires two people to initiate, but the male only contributes a set of chromosomes, basically 50% of the instructions which will be used. I've never, ever, met a man who wasn't willing to "donate instructions", whether or not construction actually began. On the other hand the woman contributes the other 50% of the instructions, and 100% of the actual building material used for construction of the growing body within her. This 100% investment on her part gives her total say in whether or not she wants to go ahead with the project. If she decides NOT to proceed with construction of a new body, no one dies. Abortion can be likened to halting construction on a house. If construction is stopped early enough, no one moves in. If construction is halted later, or if the house is destroyed, whoever is in residence just moves out. No one can say with certainty exactly when a soul takes residence in a growing body, but if the soul is in residence, it simply moves out to another body.

Creation Ex-Nihilo - Did God Create Everything Out of Nothing?
by Ianone inor did god create everything out of pre-existent and eternal matter?
-
gaiagirl
I would answer that there was never a time when "nothing" was all that existed. There has always been either energy, or both energy and matter (I doubt that there was ever a time when there was only matter, but no energy). It has been demonstrated that matter can change form, i.e. become a different type of matter and also how it can, under the right conditions, transform directly into energy. This is in fact how the Sun and other stars create heat and light. The process is considered to be reversible, i.e. energy can form matter. So, the material Universe formed from pre-existing energy. In a sense, matter can be said to have "condensed" from energy. "God" was an invention by primitive people who didn't understand the process.
