I don't think "oldest" necessarily correlates with "worst", I see many old cars which are well maintained, although I've had some of both, and some which were both at the same time. In high school, I drove a 1959 Fiat sedan for a while, until I got something better. Presently, I drive a 1989 Toyota pickup, still in good shape and runs great...would NOT trade it for a NEW pickup from any manufacturer except possibly Jeep (if they made the Gladiator, I'd probably buy one).

Is it ALWAYS wrong to call an idiot an 'IDIOT'?!
by nicolaou in.
i mean c'mon, don't you just wish you could.. .

I'd say that if the person self-identifies as an idiot, and is affectionaly called an idiot by their friends, or if they use the term to similarly describe their friends, then it is acceptable to refer to them an idiot. In doing so, you are only agreeing with what they themselves are already saying, so there is no grounds for offence from any reasonable person. I believe this was discussed at length in another thread on this forum.
Further, I have observed that, at least in the South, it is also acceptable to call someone an idiot even if the above mentioned conditions are not met, provided you append your statement with the expression "bless your heart", i.e.: "You are a complete idiot, bless your heart". : )

Is life a fundamental law - or does the universe need observers
by Qcmbr inat the current age of the universe with the laws of physics as currently manifest is life a fundamental organisational aspect of physics and maths?
if we look at crystals, snow flakes, chemical reactions they are forced to form / organise a certain way when the conditions are within certain parameters.
is life also like this?

I would say that life is a fundamental property of matter, an extension of the natural property in which matter naturally assembles itself into more complex forms. Atoms spontaneously link together to form compounds, arrange themselves to form crystal lattices, react to other compounds and the presence or absence of heat, etc.
Life appeared on Earth very shortly after the planet cooled enough to allow liquid water, implying that life occurs everywhere that conditions permit.
That we are not alone in the Universe has been a widely held view since the ancient Greeks, they had an expression "To claim this is the only inhabited world is as unwise as saying there is only one blade of grass growing in a meadow".

WHAT IS JW view on trilobithes(sp?)
by badboy inthose creatures that lived millions of years ago.

Before the Cambrian, there were complex, multicellular creatures, but none had hard shells. As a result, fossils from before the Cambrian are less common than after, simply because having a hard shell dramatically increases the chances of becoming a fossil.
So, the apparant absence of fossils prior to the Cambrian led some to conclude that life appeared at that time, already developed.
In recent decades quite a few fossils from BEFORE the Cambrian have been found. Some are obviously evolutionary ancestors to Cambrian and later forms. Others appear to be lines which died out, and are not related to existing forms.

Evolution
by B_Deserter ini went to an aquarium this weekend and saw these: link.
here we have a near perfect example of a transitional form between fish and amphibians.
this thing is literally a fish-frog (even possibly a retarded fish-frog!).

I keep fish for a hobby, and have wanted for a long time to have three tanks, side by side. In the first tank would be an African Bicher (pronounced biker), a lobe-finned fish which resembles a small coelocanth. They are often observed to use their fins to walk on the bottom, and especially to maneuver in dense vegetation. They also have a simple lung, and sometimes rise to the surface to gulp air. In the second tank would be a mudskipper. In the third tank would be a newt or axolotl.

How long does the typical church service last?
by B_Deserter insitting anywhere for 2 hours is a recipe for dozing off as far as i'm concerned.
i would think the typical church service wouldn't be the 2-hour ordeal the sunday meeting is, but i don't know for sure.

At the UU church I attend, services run from 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on the number of announcements, particular music played, and the length of the sermon. After services are done we usually hang out and drink coffee and socialize (actually found out there are lots of jokes about UU's and coffee): A survey was given to leaders of various congregations in a large metropolitan area, asking what they would save if their church or temple was on fire. The rabbi of the Jewish synagogue said he would grab the scrolls of the Torah and make his escape. The priest of the Catholic church said he would try to drag the statues of the Virgin Mary and Jesus out the door before they were consumed by flames. The minister from the UU church simply replied: The Coffee Pot

High Def TV ..This is bad
by Connaughty ini recently attended our special assembly day and the visiting speaker put down hdtv because he didn't think we needed it.
he said that we've been watching tv for many years now without it.
i don't know what bethel is going to do when the tv networks switch to that system.

I wonder if the WTBTS had any negative comments about television itself when it became widely available in the late 40's and early 50's? Or what they said about color television when it took off in the early 60's?

According to Firpo Carr (JW Ph.D) Bible Says Black Men More "Endowed"
by Justitia Themis inhttp://firpocarr.com/_wsn/page5.html.
the bible and black male sexuality(does size really matter?
)by firpo w. carr, ph.d.los angeles sentinel newspaper(october 25 - 31, 2007)it has been rumored from time immemorial that when it comes to genitalia, black men are generally more endowed than are men of other races.

Interesting that Carr equates "Egyptian" with "black". Egyptians were primarily of the Coptic race, wheras "blacks" were from sub-Saharan Africa. Paintings inside pyramids and the famous painted bust of Nefertiti, show that the Egyptians were specifically NOT black as a rule, although there were certainly some blacks living in Egypt then, as now.
