I read somewhere that all the ancient cultures were making excessive longevity claims back in the day. The Sumerians had their kings reigning for tens of thousands of years for example. I can't find the original article now, it was on the James Randi Educational Forum I think, but here's a Wiki link on the subject:

why did man go from living 900 years to 90?
by sowhatnow ini cant recall the scripture, where it says than only a few men will he live to be 80 years or so, can anyone recall that?.
so then im wondering, if it is a fact that men lived long years 900 in some cases, for what reason would god limit our lifespan if our time is so short compared to his?.
how on earth does man go from living 8 and 9 hundred years down to 80 to 100 ?.

Do you think you should have the right to decline business on Personal or Religious grounds?
by PokerPlayerPhil inshould individual businesses have the right to pick and chose who they serve?
if a muslim decides he won't bake the cake of a radical zionist that says "reclaim the temple in jerusalem" should the government be allowed to punish the muslim baker?
maybe you can help me understand the issues more clearly because were becoming hyper-sensitive and soon your going to need a handbook what's the proper thing to say.

"Refusing to bake a cake with plastic figurines of the same sex on the top is illegal; refusing to bake the same cake with the same sex figurines performing a sex act is legal."
Shouldn't that be the other way around?
Ohhh Myyyy! :)

As a group JWs ARE the only ones trying to do what God requires despite all their faults and misunderstand of many many texts.
I disagree with this also. I think that *individual* JW's may be doing this, but as a group, nowadays, they are a false religion serving men's interests not gods.
People here should grow up and stop being so self centered and looking at the bad in every thing.
I think that's a very sweeping and judgemental thing to say. This very thread is a great example of mature, caring, positive people coming together to help a fellow human being through a difficult time.

Atheism
by Jonathan Drake inrecent events and book reads (one suggested by cofty i believe- thank you) have lead me to the only logical and acceptable conclusion:.
there is no god.. simple logical reasoning: matter can neither me created or destroyed.
so the amount of mass in the universe is constant.

"From a logical perspective lack of evidence means no more than lack of evidence. To say that lack of evidence means anything more is fallacy."
And *that* means that Jehovah, Cthulhu and Harry Potter have equal existential validity.
That means quite a lot ...

Good luck Garrett!
If you have dear friends with open minds who are still JW's it could be worth reaching out to them after a while has passed, because they can't reach out to you of course. I have a couple of friends who are still JW's who I meet for a drink now and then (discreetly). We don't talk religion but they get to see that I haven't turned into an amoral monster and that I'm there for them if need be.

Yep, I get it too. Most of my family are still "in", including the intelligent ones! I also wish I could discover Phizzy's silver bullet.
One of the things that really bothers me is that, the way things are set up now, even the youngest member of my family could live their whole life as a JW. The fairytale is engineered to never end.

TO THE STUPID ATHEISTS:
by atheist_R_stupid inbeing that this is not "ex jws" and in fact, more driven by atheists talking a bunch of crap, im not even going to address you people like you know anything about jws because you dont.
nor am i going to assume you know the bible because none of you do.. and yes, im speaking down at you all because you men have actually went out your way to make a site to speak down at an entire group of people.
yet i bet you cant even handle a single uswer talking down at you, like you talk down about jws can you?.

Problem is with all those prickles sticking out, hugging is hard.

I thought about this when I watched the film Philomena about the Irish babies of single mums that were taken from them and forcibly adopted. I thought, what if Ireland wasn't Catholic but JW instead.
My conclusion is that the situation would have been if not the same then worse.
