what do you think about these things.

it seems like a monumental waste of time and money, a pipe dream of the governing body based on wishful thinking.

The point being, I dont see why they cant do all of this at headquarters. All it takes is a computer to transmit data.

Yes, they could, but probably not so effectively, or even so accurately.

Remember, buying a property is a capital asset whose valve can be realised when sold and not a 'running cost' whose valve is lost.

Look at how the U.N. does it. Lots of language flowing in and out there. No need to have an expensive property in Florida.

Interesting example - as, no, they don't - they use just six languages. If you wanna make a statement in your own language (not one of the 6) perhaps for political PR reasons, then you need to bring your own translation.

The European Union at least uses 23 official languages, though only effectively three working languages, of which English is the most used apparently - might cause a bit of a problem when Britain exits....

Oh, and building in the out back of beyond in Africa is probably way way cheaper than having it at 'HQ'

I suppose the bottom line is everybody should speak English - I mean they're all gonna be speaking English in the 'New Order Paradise' aren't they - after all it's the 'perfect lanuage'!

(please, that last paragraph is meant to be ironic)

New Dutch Assembly Hall Swifterbant - 17 September 2016

a new 2,500 seater assembly hall in the netherlands - which expands to 3,500 seats for the annual conventions - is being dedicated on saturday 17 september 2016.. the existing hall on the site is converted into a venue for the wt schools - lecture room with ancillary accomodation - bedrooms, kitchen, canteen, study areas etc etc.

But seriously, out of all languages, by it's very nature Sign Language is going to be the least geo-centric language.

But why Florida?

Because it is one area of the USA that has a highest number of hearing disabled people

And, more importantly WT-wise, a high number/density of congregations (publishers) - you can see that quite simply by doing a basic 'state' search for ASL congegations on jw.org.

They have to translate ASL somewhere, they need a bigger and higher spec place for the production of video.

Where in the US would you have expected WT to do ASL translation and video production??

just looking at some youtube videos and came across a john joseph may, a former jw who was involved in a controversy in ireland back in the late 70s i think.. it all started with a watchtower article september 15th ??.

does anyone know what the article was about?

and why so much controversy surrounding this.

Note the reference at the bottom of the middle column regarding the WT's changed view of somebody who was dissassociated compared to being disfellowshipped.

I think this is more to do with the way the (financial) nature of language translation in WT land has changed over the years.

Previously, to be of any use the material being translated needed to be printed so that it could be useful - and printing used to be fairly expensive with the old style hot plates etc etc.You also had the logistics of distributing the printed materials in relatively small quanities both to Bethels and then to individual congregations - packing up lots of small quantities of even just tracts takes time to do!

Two key things have changed

Firstly, printing itself is relatively cheaper even for short small runs
Secondly, and more importantly, it doesn't even need to be printed now!! The website and the smart phone app means that distributing translated material can be extremely cheap to do - and that's really been a game changer for the WT.

So now the biggest cost in translating is the actual translating - so it makes sense to do what WT are doing now...

Firstly, buy a RTO - basically a domestic house - which is a resaleable asset
Secondly, buying it in the area where the langage is spoken is good for keeping those working their up-to-speed with the language - and can give the WT kudos with local government and NGOs etc
Thirdly, having a local office means it's easier to get additional volunters who speak the language to come in on an ad-hoc or temporary basis.

Local temporary local volunters can then do the leg work of initial translations etc while the permanent staff can knock it into shape for a final translation copy that can be proof read by local volunters. The final translated material can then be upoaded and made available to public via the website and app - it doesn't all need to be printed.

What's the point in having Welsh translators located in London? Buy a resaleable asset in the local area, get local staff and volunteers, get the translated stuff emailed to Bethel and they just upload to website and app. QED

Also remember you really need to underlay the above with the Kingdom Ministry Service 1980

The front page monthy 'Letter From The Governing Body' reported that there had been apostasy and disfellowshiping of some in the Bethel family and New York city area.

On page two the 'Announcements' mentioned that Raymond Franz was no longer a member of the Governing Body and of the Brooklyn Bethel family as of 22 May 1980.
