cofty: Exploring the case for mandatory reporting: a summary of a roundtable hosted by the NSPCC..
Thanks - it's a couple of years old, but even from just glancing through it, you can see why...
there's a lot of criticism surrounding the jw's handling of chiild abuse within their ranks with a lot of it being well deserved.
but i'm interested to know how people on here think child abuse allegations should be handled.
there's a few scenarios below, the first couple are easy then it gets a bit more complex.

round two of the australian royal commission into institutional child abuse has all the makings of a very damaging event for the organization, if what is going to happen to the catholic church is any indication.. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-02-03/royal-commission-most-catholic-archbishops-to-give-evidence/8240208.
.
A message from Archbishop Mark Coleridge ahead of the final Catholic Church hearing of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
By now the Royal Commission into the institutional abuse of the young is into it's 4th year and it's been a long and agonizing but very important journey for the church and for many others as well. On Monday the 6th February they will begin the final hearing into the Catholic Church and it will go for about three weeks and I myself it seems will appear a number of times through that final hearing.
In those weeks the Royal Commission will try to do two things. It will ask the question first of all - what has the Church learned from the experience of the Royal Commission? What have we done on the basis of what we've learned and what will we do in the future? And that's a very important question. Secondly the Royal Commission will ask what were the cultural factors that led to the abuse in the Church and to the mishandling of the abuse by Church leaders. And that too is a very important question because it's not enough to change procedures and protocols. That has to happen, but we have to shift the culture. And that's a much more difficult thing to do. So that's why that second question - what were the cultural factors - is again a very important one.
Through these three weeks there will be some grim moments and there will be some shocks, inevitably. But they will also be a chance to tell a better story of what has been done, and what is being done now, and what will be done in the future to ensure that the future is very much better than the past has been.
We say this is the final hearing into the Catholic Church but in fact there will be a story to be told beyond the final hearing. The Commission will present its report at the end of the year. And that will be important but it will also have a long tail. The journey will continue long after the final report has been published. So I invite all of you to join me on the journey through the three weeks of this final hearing but the journey that stretches before us beyond that so that together we can do everything possible to ensure a better future for the Church; a better future particularly for young people; and even more particularly for those who have survived abuse, that justice and healing may be done to them So, a better future for them but for the whole of society as well.
my wife found this 1/4 page ad on page 2 of yesterday's nj star-ledger, probably the biggest newspaper in nj.
pretty telling.. .
I like the idea they are all learning from each other.
And there's a connection between the OP and Shine yeah?... Erin Brockovich
i know this has been discussed over the years on this forum, but i just had to post this again!.
it seems that the popular fad amongst the "spiritual" ones in the local circuits is to home school their children instead of sending them to school.. now to clarify, we are in a very nice area of semi rural australia .
one with very community minded, and strong family values.

Press play if you’re too cool for school
From Ryan Gosling to JRR Tolkien via Beatrix Potter....
An investigation by The Times last year found that home-schooling had soared in the past five years, fuelled by parents missing out on places at the best schools or shunning their culture of excessive testing.
Figures obtained through freedom of information requests showed a 45 per cent increase in home-education in five years, with almost 33,000 children now taught at home.
Experts said that this could be the tip of the iceberg because the actual number was unknown. Not one local authority of 80 that responded could say exactly how many home-schooled children were in their area.
haha - sorry for double post.
i tried posting this yesterday, looks like i should've waited for another 40 minutes before trying to report - sorry.

Not entirely relevant to this thread but I just saw a post on reddit which linked to an Australian law firm who seem to be going after child abuse cases in JW land in Oz.
Thanks
Yeah, apart from the firms running the OP advert, I think there's a few going after JW child abuse cases now...

Jehovah's Witness Sexual Abuse Claims - As with other religious organizations, Jehovah's Witnesses have faced public criticism for allegations of sexual abuse within their congregations. Attorneys Fighting the Jehovah’s Witnesses for Covering up Child Sexual Abuse - Much like the Mormons, the Jehovah’s Witnesses create a very isolated community of followers that have little contact with non-members. They insist on dealing with allegations of child sexual abuse within the organization, covering it up from public view and, effectively, allowing abusers to continue harming the vulnerable.

i tried posting this yesterday morning - but it seemed to hand on 'queued for processing' - it's been 24 hours now and it hasn't appeared yet, so i'm posting again..... wednesday's episode of bbc tv's long running daily late-lunch drama/soap 'doctors' was centred on a jw-related 'blood' story - looking at the knock-on effect three years.. they don't mention jw, just god.
they've also taken a number of liberties in order to make the story work (sister giving out personal mobile number to man, making 'return visit' on man by herself etc.
the time frame for the story is also really only a few hours) - but it's an interesting twist on the usual portrayal as it looks at the knock-on effect three years.. you can watch it in full on the bbc webste via ipayer for the next couple of weeks.. wednesday 1 february 2017 - bbc one tv 1.45pm - doctors: a question of faith.

Without knowing it, a sister calls on a man on the three year anniversary of him losing his wife to leukaemia. He takes a magazine
He visits Doctors - asks for sedatives - but is refused - Doctor concerned regarding his drinking
Man returns home and phones up sister for her to come back and visit him straight-away.
He then drugs her drink of tea and reveals that he and his wife where JWs, but he lost his faith when his wife died due to the blood issue - he blames the sister for her death.
He kidnaps the sister and puts her in his basement - and says will only release her when she signs a piece of paper renoucing her faith.
He leaves her in the basement and goes back again to his wife's grave - his Doctor, who has been concerned with him, sees him there and chats with him - the man has been drinking liquor and seems to have taken some pills, but before passing out, gets his house keys out and tells Doctor to 'release her'

jehovah's witness abused girls after luring them with video games, court told.
This is the same story/article, but this one has slightly more information in it
To help with the geography a bit for people:
The first report said "he was living in Guisborough at the time" and "when the elders of the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Guisborough congregation heard about the allegations...."
The second report states that he "allegedly abused the girls in a village near Malton after putting them on his knee."
From Malton to Guisborough is a one hour, 37 mile drive north all the way through the North York Moors - there are a number of KHs either in or around both Malton and Guisborough.
1938 - freedom or romanism?
("warning").
informant july, 1938 re:freedom or romanism?
Yes, I have seen that one, but I think mine is better quality being that it is in colour.
Actually, I was going through my own archive, and to be honest, it's fairly difficult to find stuff that isn't already available online in one form or another..... difficult, but not impossible
I do also greatly appreciate, as I'm sure lots of others do, the time and effort expended by various people to make these things available online.
i was on a job last week and the p.o from my old congro was there and told me they had just re modled the k.h.the r.b.c quoted them $240.000 they did it for $120.000 so why the big diffrence in price??

Hmmm, maybe that's one of the reasons for the WT disbanding the RBCs and bringing it all 'in-house' with the LDC - to stop this apparent over-pricing.
Under the old arrangment the RBC didn't pay the costs, they where all just passed onto the KH congregation/s to pay ALL the bills NOW.
Now with the new arrangement it is the LDC who pays the upfront direct cost - and who are therefore much more likely to be very careful with how they spend it - if they have a $100,000 budget, they are much more likely to want to spend it doing up as many KH's as they can (simply for the kudos off being seen to be busy and helping lots of KH) rather than spending it all on just one KH - previously it didn't matter, the direct upfront cost was borne, not by the RBC, but by the KH congregation/s - of course the KH congregation/s nowaday would pay a monthly contribution, but the above principle I think still applies.
