You're correct Tornintwo. The dub from Oz HQ just restated their view on complying with law. He got a new understanding that elders and service desk who receive confessions/evidence which convinces them as to guilt over crime actually fall under a specific Australian state law which means they have to report. He got very excited about the prospect of printing a new book to help explain their policies more clearly for Aussie JWs. Otherwise... no change.. he even tried his hand at minimising the numbers and stating they'd expect Aussie jdubs to go to prison rather than the GB re-interpreting the bible to conform with a law. -

Mandatory reporting of Child sexual abuse and the failure to report when it`s not mandatory.
by smiddy inthe jehovah`s witnesses are on record as saying they obey the law in reporting child sex abuse when it is mandatory in the state or territory where it occurred .. in other words where it is not mandatory they do not report such abuse.. they will only do so if the law of the land requires them to do so.. where is the duty of care ,the protection of the victim ,the support ,and the legal protection , he or she would get from the government sponsored systems in place to protect such victims.. they obviously do not have the victims welfare as a first priority , if they did they would report it to the relevant departments of concern as soon as they became aware of such abuse , but they do not.regardless of whether it was mandatory or not.. it obviously has to do with protecting their perceived image of themselves in the community of not having a problem with child sex abuse.. as has been stated many times : "you " / " we" do not want to drag jehovah`s name through the mud".
and as the" royal commission " focusing on jehovah`s witnesses is demonstrating , children`s welfare are not being met.. smiddy.

DesirousofChange - the judicial committee is not a confessional. It receives confessions, but it is not a confessional. There is no veil of secrecy whatsoever. The Catholic priest doesn't fill forms out for his bishop about the confession he's just received, let alone send off all the details to a database held in the Vatican. One doesn't have three priests sat in the confessional box. etc etc. The Jdubs use the US constitution which guarantees certain rights for religions, but elsewhere, they don't get to tell a court 'we used a scripture, you can't touch us'. -

Spinks is absolutely blind to the issue McClellan raises over their interpretation of the bible requiring using their own judgements. McClellan seems amused by that inability to see. -

Absolutely OC. Difference in his attitude is pretty shocking. -

Falling in love with Monty Baker's counsel. She's brutal with her questioning. Asking about them sending known offenders to knock on people's doors. Spinks tries to dance, complains she's being 'too absolute'. -

Listener - before early 90s, they didn't collect the extent of information they do now. So earlier decades will be underreported.
McClellan picking up on how they pick and choose to interpret scriptures with Spinks' understanding of New Testament rules on women. (1 Corinthians 14: 33 - 35) Spinks talks of not "interpreting over literally". McClellan picks him up on it. "So you don't follow that one?". Spinks waffles about context.

Stewart setting out the figures for abuse within JWs and how this guy has been trying to present them to minimise things. Redacted report will go into exhibits, along with correspondence with WT's lawyers related to it.
289 reports of abuse in past 10 years. Most related to earlier period.

This moron is confusing their judicial system with a real legal system. "We disfellowshipped [an abuser] for longer than he was in prison."
McClellan picking him up on it. JWs don't have the ability to deal with child abusers. Service desk is still digging in around the idea that they are more moral than society. He's giving the commission a good glimpse of how they really see things. He talks out of both sides of his mouth.

Spinks ending with emphasising that they're fruitloops but unable to see what an easy way out the commission is offering them on some fundamental issues. The commission seems to be offering them a way just to report to the police, to accept different forms of evidence (which would only be available in proper legal process itself) and so they get their scriptural kicks and children are better protected because to get those extra witnesses elders would need to go to the police. But, no. "We go to prison because the gibbering idiots in Brooklyn decide something, until they decide otherwise".
@ScenicViewer - pretty clear too that the commission is aware that their standards are hardly unchanging.

McClellan cutting through the bs again. Service desk guy tries to sidestep direct question, waffles that no-one has ever been forced to attend a JC, judge not having it. Wants the issue of whole judicial committee process addressing.
