You're right, it seems JWs don't have much of clue about what goes on in the world.

Take a look at the last four or five 'watching the world' articles on jw.org. We find not one word about the many atrocities committed by extremists - for some unfathomable reason WTS thinks the rise of atheism in Japan or alcoholism in Outer Mongolia is more newsworthy.

'the Koran was not that different from the Bible' - this is one thing your JW has correct.

it has been a long time.. thanks to jw.org, i was reading some jw material (what does the bible teach i believe).

it was the first time reading a "book study" book in many years and i was blown away by the controlling, cultish writing.

this question especially struck me as manipulative: do you believe that we are living in the last days, and why?.

Sorry new light, I also didn't take the time to properly read throught the opening post.

You're quite, the fact that the bible 'student' is not given a 'why or why not' is a bit disturbing - independent thinking not allowed.

I don't think the org is becoming more sinister - it's always been like this.

The Writing Dept. print the questions and the answers, all devout JWs have to do is parrot them on a Sunday afternoon.

let's hope they are ready.. "it is with pride that we announce the end of uk combat operations in helmand, having given afghanistan the best possible chance of a stable future.

our armed forces tremendous sacrifice laid the foundations for a strong afghan security force, set the security context that enabled the first democratic transition of power in the countrys history, and stopped it being a launch pad for terrorist attacks in the uk.

In answer to the OP: hell no! It's been stated by other posters in other threads that humankind has never had it so good, especially those of us living in the developed world. I've never forgotten this.

@NAVYTOWN - your OP makes good points.

If I were braver I'd probably be atheist.

Does the existance/nonexistance of God even matter? There's nothing we can do about it, we can't know for sure, all we can do is live our lives and do our best.

I heard somebody, somewhere (it may have been Clive James) say that the logical position is to start off atheist and the revise your position with the gathering of new evidence.

doesn't have to be for anyone around you, or have anything to do with jw world.

just something that you do for you and only you and that fills your soul (whatever that means).

I've alway had an amateur interest in languages, with the Germanic languages and Old English in particular.

I also love natural history - I'm studying animal biology at uni.

I love red wine and cider, but not in the same glass.

Hi cultBgone. I gotta admit the congregation I was in was largely made up of decent people.

However, there were some with 'scary cult personas'.

My mother could never quit smoking. I had an elder say to me: 'maybe you should give up witnessing to your mum, she's still smoking, she hasn't fully accepted the message, she might not make it'. Translation into plain English: our loving God Jehovah will very soon kill your mother because she smokes.

I was a true believer, 16 years old at the time.
