  He gives an anecdote on how hard it would be to create just one new protein by chance — "the odds are so astronomical that there are fewer atoms in the entire universe in comparison: “The odds bury you. It can’t be done.” - this is essentially Watchtower's 'argument':

  1. Ignore the fossil evidence that supports natural selection occurring over geological time.

  2. Say how long the odds are over complex molecules developing (this is actually whataboutery - pretend to debate evolution but then switch to talking about biogenesis at the first available opportunity).

  NB - a computer scientist is an expert in the field of computers only. His or her opinions on evolution carry about as much weight as my opinions on art.

  The theory of evolution is out there to be criticised legitimately. Any biologist who is successful will be awarded a Nobel prize and much more.

  Yeah, good question. You're an intelligent woman and these questions must be asked.

  If someone called my mother a bitch, I'd be upset.

  Of course, context matters - let's say my mum is alive (she's not - she's been dead for 15 years) and someone calls her a bitch to her face. That's outlawed in UK law under disturbance of the peace. That's right, us UK citizens can't go up to some random schmoe in the street and yell 'bitch!' (or 'nigger', or 'slut' or 'white bastard' or 'Paki', or 'faggot', etc.) in their face. But, free speech means that calling someone names on social media or as a joke is kinda ok. It's not disturbance of the peace. If someone called my mother a bitch on FaceBook, well, that's covered because of free speech - I don't have to read those nasty posts about my mother. If I get offended, it's because I chose to read those nasty posts about my mother.

  @Min - actually the C-word, although common in jokes or memes, is still highly offensive here in the UK.

  If someone called someone the C-word in the street, expect a fist fight.

  @The Fall Guy - the N-word used to be an ethnic slur. But it's meaning has changed over the decades. According to my grandmother, the N-word used to mean a shade of brown, before it was used as a slur (not sure about that, it's worth checking out).

  A large part of this change of meaning is down to black Americans*. They use it in a different context and spell it slightly differently - 'nigga'. It can mean 'idiot' (check out Chris Rock's stand-up routine: there's black people and then there's niggas); it can also mean dude or mate (e.g. what's up my nigga?). I remember the first time I listened to Fiddy Cent's In Da Club - explicit version. He says the N-word more times than an Alabama klansman.

  African-Americans also have a certain flow and flair in their way of speaking. In short, African-Americans have made the N-word 'cool'. There is also some comedic potential there, too.
  

  I guess some racist whites still use the word as an ethnic slur, but just as many use the word in the same ways as African-Americans do.

  BTW - I don't think words should be outright banned by British or American law. Let the racists say 'nigger'. Surprised? Well, what were they gonna do, sing us a chorus of Ebony and Ivory? XD

  #Persecution selfies: what do you think?

  so apparently the new watchtower russia exhibition features a pretend cell for jws to take pretend "persecution selfies' and wallow in the glorious suffering that is essential for watchtower theology to work - yet is strikingly missing from the lives of 99% of witnesses.. in fact most governments go to great lengths to protect the rights of witnesses, spending millions in public funds either directly to watchtower - in the form of grants ( norway, germany etc) - in various types of tax relief, or in the money spent in court cases establishing watchtowers rights and freedoms (& protecting their kids, whether they know it or not).. i'm interested to know how everyone feels about this...particularly terry walstrom and other guys who have spent time in jail in the name of watchtower's freedom of conscience.

  personally i think it reeks of desperation by watchtower and is another example of the type of fantasizing that witnesses regularly indulge in.. also....funny how the end is soooo close that they've had time to build a museum of watchtower history!!

  anyone else see the irony in that?!

  JWs in Russia do experience some persecution but it seems the WTS is milking it and using it to validate their beliefs and virtue-signal. Pretty lousy behaviour if you ask me.

  BTW there are religious minorities that experience extreme persecution - Eqyptian Copts, Syrian Christians, Saudi Shiah, Yazidi, etc.

  The persecution experienced by Russian JWs is nothing in comparison.

  You're an intelligent person but historically illiterate, it must be said. There was the Luxor Massacre* in 1997. Islamist extremists beheaded and slaughtered a bunch of tourists in Luxor, Egypt, in 1997.

  Too recent? Ok the founder of Islam, Prophet Muhammad, himself beheaded hundreds of Jewish captives, in accord with an Arabian judge's ruling. Muhammad dug trenches outside the court. Then the male captives were split into two groups: those who had underarm and pubic hair, and those that did not. Members of the first group were beheaded with a sword. I remember reading this account:

  "An adult male Jewish captive was brought out. He had torn his expensive clothes so that Muhammad and his followers couldn't loot his clothes post mortem. He kneeled down and his head was struck off."

  I've got a pretty good memory so it's close to being verbatim. Beheading is one of the Hudud punishments in Islam (the reason why Saudi Arabia beheads criminals).

  These and many others like them are atrocities. Unlike Christianity, Islam never had a reformation.
  

  If you care to honestly examine the history of the ME, you'll find that it is steeped in blood.

  The current situation in Syria is much more than just the mistakes of the Sykes-Picot Agreement.

  With the benefit of hindsight, it's easy to say that the Kurds should have been given their own nation state. Yeah, that's a good point but it's very easy to breezily declare that with 20/20 vision/hindsight.

  The Middle East has always been a region rife with tribalism, massacres, 'holy wars', beheadings and genocide.

  Here's a clip from a day or two ago in northern Syria. Syrian Sunni extremists, supported by the Turkish army, promise to behead any 'infidel' Kurd they find. A truly disturbing threat, when we consider the fate of James Foley, Stephen Sotloff, David Haines and Alan Henning.
