I can't see anyone beating Djokovic in the Men's.
But, a part of me kinda wants a female Russian or Belorussian player to win the Ladies' Singles Final.
It would be hilarious watching the British media and Wimbledon trying to deal with that, lol.
... is absolutely ridiculous.. last year, 2022, russian and belorussian tennis players were banned from wimbledon.
let that just sink in.
if you were a pro tennis player, and happened to be a russian or belorussian citizen, the all england club decided that you could not compete at their annual grass tournament.. let's explore that particular brand of discrimination and lunacy further.

Damn, Slim, you're sarcasm is so sharp that it can cut people without them knowing it, lol.

Actually I was vaguely ashamed - yeah, I was too. It made me ashamed to be English.
On the one hand they demonise Putin as this evil dictator, yet penalize ordinary Russians for what he supposedly is solely responsible for - exactly. Under normal circumstances, if a Russian-born candidate was refused a job because that candidate was Russian, there would be a clear case of unfair discrimination.
And let's not forget the Belorussian players, too.
Sabalenka is Belorussian, and she was penalised because Belorussian dictator Alexander Lukashenko supports Putin. It's madness, utter madness.
the "independent scotland" thread got me thinking on this.

what are your thoughts on brexit?
why FFS, just because you are xenophobic ? - that is a ridiculous question. Do you honestly think all supporters of ECHR are xenophiles and all opposed to ECHR are xenophobes?
It is there to defend the Human Rights of people, based upon the Human Rights Charter we helped to write ! - but a universal set of human rights might not actually exist.
If you believe in universal human rights, please show evidence which supports their existence.

Let's explore that particular brand of discrimination and lunacy further. In 1982, Argentina invaded the British Oversees Territory of The Falklands. But Argentinian footballer Diego Maradona still played in the FIFA World Cup that year. Just imagine if he and the entire Argentina squad had been banned, lol. It would have been ridiculous. Maradona wasn't a politician. It was his job to kick a leather ball into a goal, and he was a fantastically gifted player, the GOAT in my opinion.
There is a tennis body (sorry, don't know its name) which is above the All England Club, and they have decided that Wimbledon must not ban outright Russian and Belorussian tennis players this year. So, a kind of compromise has been reached - Russian/Belorussian players are allowed to compete but they must do so under neutral conditions. So, Russian player Mirra Andreeva is in Wimbledon this year, but the word 'Russia' must not be after her name in brackets.
The 1936 Berlin Olympics were heavily politicised by Hitler to promote the belief of white supremacy. That hilariously blew up in his face when African-American sprinter Jesse Owens annihilated the white sprinters (and sprinters of other colours) to win multiple golds. The All England Club seemingly has learned nothing from this. Keep politics out of sport, ffs ...

What I want to know is, where's the benefit? - any benefits are not obvious.
There could and should be benefits, though - the UK economy is huge, and we have lots of willing trading partners - the EU, Australia, Singapore, South Korea, the US, Canada, etc.
The fact that Brexit is going poorly is down mainly to the incompetence of UK government ministers, but the sheer bloody-mindedness of EU ministers to make Britain pay for daring to leave must also be acknowledged.
Brexit was supposed to be about regaining control, i.e. Britain should be politically independent and should govern itself. Sadly, this hasn't been properly realised because we're still a member of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). This means foreign judges can still overrule legal decisions made by British ones. This, I think, is bad. We should leave ECRH.

I was referring to the 'splendid isolationism' and strain of Euro-skepticism in Britain, especially after 1815 - there's still some conflation going on here, I'm afraid.
I'm not Euro-skeptic because I know that the UK is part of Europe.
yeah, so i've bought this film recently but have never seen it.. i've kinda heard that it's a good film.
i certainly like director nicolas roeg's film don't look now (1973).
roeg also directed this film, the man who fell to earth (1976).. so, i was just wondering if any of you have seen it, and what you thought of it.. er, try not to give spoilers, please ....

Britain has always had this "part of Europe/not part of Europe" thing - actually, no, it never has had this.
Britain is part of Europe (a continent).
Britain is not part of the EU (a supra-national political entity which came into existence in the early to mid 1990s).
Please don't conflate Europe and the EU. It's a fairly common mistake.
humza yousaf, scotland's first minister, said: "scotland, i'm afraid, is suffering because we are not independent.

try telling that to scotland's tourists and many island communities: the ferry services are dying month by month, and the two new overdue & over-budget ferries justify a serious legal/criminal enquiry.. any bunch of incompetents who can't provide a small country with a ferry service and a legally binding contract to build 2 new boats - having controlled scotland since 2007 - has no credibility in claiming they could run a country!.
Scotland will opt for independence - but we've already discussed how this would break up the UK.
Scotland must not be allowed to break up the UK without the whole of the UK electorate voting on the matter.
