  i'm giving a party next week -- sunday, december 14 at 1:00 p.m. reason for the party?

  i got a huge turkey on sale and i need to cook it.

  i'm making turkey and trimmings, neighbors are bringing whatever they want, mostly vegetarian stuff.

  too nice and polite

  anyone finding themselves being labeled as "too nice" or "polite" after being a lifelong jw and integrating into the "new world" of realistic beings?.

  When I saw the title of your post I thought you were asking for me personally. Yes, people of "the world" think I am kinda strange, in a too nice and polite way. Back in the days of when I was a Witness, the folks at the Kingdom Hall thought of me as being too "worldly", a weirdo. I don't fit in at either place.

  I have to often remind myself that people rarely like people that they don't understand or that they can't control.

  Why dont U.S. JW's Celelbrate Thanksgiving

  i remeber the old young people ask book had an entry that explained why each holiday was bad.

  i was searching for it today on jw.org and it looks like the new young people ask has ommited that section.

  im just curiouse why jw's dont celebrate the holiday..

  My mother would always buy a big turkey and all of the usual foods that go with it. Just wouldn't call it "Thanksgiving". She said that there is nothing wrong with turkey, and turkeys are more plentiful at this time of year.

  When I left WT Land, I noticed in my reading that many other JW's shared her sentiment.

  Okay, there's nothing wrong with pine trees. I just happen to like the smell of a pine tree in my living room. I enjoy decorating it all up. It's just that these trees are more plentiful at this time of year. I just won't call it "Christmas". Nothing wrong with that, right?

  i have a feeling i am going to have to explain to my jw folks why i have decided to allow my children to participate in holidays at school.

  theyll probably be wondering too why i will get together with our non jw family for the holidays.. .

  we know jws avoid holidays because of their pagan origins.

  Looks like someone mentioned this earlier (about 6 years ago), but I believe that it can't be emphasized enough:

  "Baptism preceded the Christian faith. It was used in Greece, Babylon, and ancient Egypt, Where the cold waters of the Nile were thought to increase strength and bestow immortality." (The Watchtower April 4, 1993, page 4)

  So, Jesus commanded his followers to be baptized. Surely Jesus must have known this was a pagan custom, he is all knowing! And being baptized is the only way that leads to salvation.

  But now, once you are actually baptized, you are doomed! You've just taken part in a pagan practice!!!

  i've had it said to me before, specifically about health, one week wine/eggs/milk/axle grease is good for you, next week it's not..

  Yes! You can disagree with a scientist and they are probably not going to try and tear your family apart and refuse to speak to you again.

  In reading the newspaper as a kid, i remember finding articles in the back of the paper such as "reading in the dark is better for your eyes than in the light", and "vitamin C is actually bad for you". Even as a dumb kid I thought to myself, where do they come up with this stuff???

  Trust me, it was not my intention to give any fodder to the JW organization. It was meant as a response to the OP's question. Science is perfect, sometimes our view of it is skewed, but we continue to research and improve. (I'm sorry, that sounds almost like the WT's excuse for their ramblings, doesn't it?).

  But why the Governing Body isn't sharing a cell with Bernie Maddoff is beyond me! I have NO sympathies for WT or any other cult or mind controlling group!

  Oh, I will take a doctor over a priest anyday. In my post I was just theorizing that discrepancies can happen because of differences of opinion, human error, and new evidence.

  A doctor, even the most experienced doctor, can not guarantee results simply because a human body is not a car! A procedure that works fine in 99 patients may not work in someone else. No slight on the doctors experience (or lack thereof) but simply because all human bodies are different.
