Poster country flags and privacy

the new forum originally had a little country flag next to each post showing the country that the post was made from based on the geoip encoding (the country the ip address is from).

before i switched over to the new site someone made an issue about it violating their privacy and i didn't want to complicate and confuse the switchover with policy debate at the same time as technical issues so removed the flags even though i disagreed.. someone has already requested it as a feature and i think it should be added back so i thought it's now time to open the discussion and get everyone's opinions.

first, the reason i think it should be shown:.

If someone CHOOSES to reveal enough information, then that is THEIR CHOICE. That is the PRINCIPLE here. You have no right to display the flag and reveal anything that I haven't given you permission to display here. Period.

"There are reasons not to make it a choice. I am loathe to overcomplicate the software just to possibly pander to the paranoia or game playing of a handful of people or implement features that are unique to a particular community (whose concerns I believe are misplaced)."

These are your own judgements on the arguments against. You are wrong, so we disagree. I am not paranoid.

So the choice can be written into the software, you are just choosing not to do it. Give it up then and let someone else do it then. Or.. just leave it as it is until you can have the choice written into the software. I don't see your argument for showing the flag as coherent, reasoned or fair and ethical. Where are your ethics? Where are your ethics? You are not showing any with your attitude about this. As was written before, this is a classic bait and switch. Dishonest lame nonsense.

Many here are frustrated as this guy doesn't appear to be really listening or taking into account any of the very reasoned and well thought out arguments against the flags. He just repeats that HE is not convinced.

The bottom line for me is this. He never received my permission to display my country flag. So on principle, he shouldn't do it. Make the display a choice. Hello?

Why not show respect to the members here, and make this a democratic decision? Have a month long poll here, with a clear question, and respect the result?

Playing god, the grand poohbah imperial president, or GB type won't cut it.

Apparently Simon, you have already made up your mind about all of this? The vast majority who have responded here are against the flags. So what was the point of all this discussion. It seemed that there was a forgone conclusion. No one was going to change your view.

This is a completely arbitrary decision, and complete utter nonsense. You are morphing into the GB right here on this site. Shameful.

what DO current Jws say at doors?

i mean, anyone with a real bible and half a brain doesn't need to log onto a website and read nonsense.. its not a bible study when you present someone a book or magazine to read along in.. its not the gospel, when its not about jesus.

so what is being pushed in the service meeting to be done at doors?.

In the last year all they do is leave a tract in the mailbox at the end of the driveway, and they don't call here as frequently as they used to. They used to leave the WT/Awake insert with me.

I left 20 years ago, and I moved into the country to a farm, not knowing until last year that my next door neighbors were JWs!!! They have moved now. I met the lady of the house a week before they moved.

I ask my sister who is still in, what are they actually teaching in the Ministry School and Service Meeting? If I ask her a question on doctrine or beliefs and the changes, she says I should ask an elder?? Well aren't you a minister? I ask. Its weird. The GB must have their heads spinning around with all the new light, vague light, and no light from Brooklyn or Bethel, that they can't keep up or explain very much.

The present solar cycle 24, flux numbers compare closely with cycle 5 and the mini Ice Age period known as the Maunder minimum from 1645-1715, and the Dalton minimum 1780-1845, where there were prolonged periods of very low solar activity.

hi simon - i'd sent you an email regarding this problem;.

i cannot see the captcha facility to enable me to prove i'm a humanzee and log-on.

so i could not gain access to my account and participate - despite trying numerous suggestions provided on the internet.. i tried one last thing - i downloaded mozilla firefox (never tried it before) and it by-passes the captcha function and gives me access now.. i look forward to getting acquainted with the new-look web site.. thanks simon..

What a mess this is for the Jehoober GBers.

They aren't separating the sheep and goats with the preaching work anymore, Jesus didn't arrive or come into the spiritual temple in 1918, there isn't an Evil slave now, and there aren't any Foolish or Wise virgins or the harvesting of the wheat and the weeds yet. And the GB is becoming "more discreet"??

Their basic teachings are disintegrating. Many of us still remember studying the big yellow book, Gods Kingdom of a Thousand Years Has Approached.

They used to equate the Foolish virgins with the Evil slave "class" as those of the Bible Stdents who didn't go along with Rutherfords reinvention of the society, held onto worldly false doctrine, and refused to go out and preach door to door.

So they've thrown Russell Rutherford and Fred Franz under the bus now. Nuts.
