  Austria goes "German Only"

  i must be a glutton for punnishment or something, but here i go again, broaching the subject of speaking english in america.. apparently a law was recently passed in austria that people must satisfactorily pass a basic german language skills test in a few months or they will be fined.

  if they do not master basic german in 4 years, they can be kicked out of the country.

  many people interviewed in the article mentioned that they are too poor to afford the classes.

  Oh, LDH. I realize that we are in agreement on many points. I even agree about the free classes you put in bold and italics, read my fist post. However, here are a few points I think you need to consider.
  1. Contrary to your last statement, I do NOT assume that people aren't learning the language on their own.
  2. While true that the world is moving to a universal economy, the international language of business is already English.
  3. The statement that I am using the language issue as a "red herring argument to limit immigration into this country" is simply not true. I bring up the language issue for the very clear reasons I have already stated in previous posts. Again, you're running to defend the helpless who are not even under attack.
  4. Should people in Southern Britan feel bad that they don't know Italian? The Romans were once there. Should the Mexicans feel bad that they don't know Aztec? The Spanish came second This arguement is rediculous. Consider this: You said "...when the immigrants from Europe came here. As a group, did they make an effort to learn those languages? No, they didn't. Period." You seem to feel that they should have made that effort. Why then shouldn't the immigrants coming to America today make that same effort you feel the Europeans should have made? Are two wrongs making a right here?

  There were realy two things that came at the same time and contributed to the moment I broke free. They were the study of the Revelation book and the coming of my Dad's divorce. While on summer break of 6th grade visiting my dad, he studied for about a week with the JWs, he was searching as was I. He decided that it wasn't for him and quit. But the JWs struck a chord with my step-mom and I. We both went in full bore. I moved in with them so I could continue. As the years went on, my step-mom bacame more and more of a controlling bitch. But she was my "spiritual head," immagine my wonderful life. My dad let it be know during my senior year that he was going to get a divorce after my graduation. I could not stand the thought of living with my step-mom and wondered how I was going to make it on my own with all the temptations. I wanted to see what it was like to smoke pot. I wanted to have premarital sex. Many other "bad" things. Then I realized that if I wanted to do these things, I must not think that they were bad. After all, I always had hated killers, cheaters, and liers, I thought they were bad. But I saw nothing bad about masturbating. If, after 5 or 6 years of trying to convince myself that these things were wrong, I didn't think that way then I never was going to.

  At the same time I was worrying about life without my step-mom to keep me in line we were studying the Revelation book. My anylitical mink kept yelling inside me, "How can they KNOW that this vision means what they say it means? How can they KNOW that their interpretations are correct? WAKE UP MAN! These are words from men with no conclusive proof of their validity. How do you not see that?" I realized that faith was the acceptance of something that could not be proven, and that I had no faith.

  These two issues kept yelling at me in the back of my head, no matter how I tried to shut them up. I felt guilty for my doubt, but couldn't escape that fact that thru all my study there was no resolution I found accetable that the JW literature could provide for either of the issues I had. I had visited my mom one week. The next week I was sick. So I had skipped several meetings. I had no excuse one night and started getting ready. I realy didn't want to go. Finally my step-mom asked me "are you ready for the meeting yet or what?" Butterflies were working overtime in my tummy. Finally I said fuck it. "Barbara, I'm not going." "What?" she said angrily. "I'm not going to the meeting, I'm not going to any more meetings at all." She stood there with no words. Finally she said "fine" and took herself and her son to the meeting. That was the moment I was no longer a JW.

  After about 5 minutes, my chest relaxed. I was free. I breathed in and it felt like I hadn't taken a breath in 6 years. I stood up and I felt taller than the Empire State Building. I was master of my own destiny. I was not a Jehovah's Witness. I was not bound by the doctrines of any organization or the controlling dictates of a power hungry bitch. I was only Adam, no more and no less. Adam was a rock, an island, untouchable, impenitrable. I had been being groomed for Bethel and I got a sinister pleasure out of the schock from the congrigation at the announcement, communicated to me thru some JWs who would still talk to me under cover. Elders and pioneers called on me, invited me out to lunch. I would accept their invitations and explain with a smile that, no, I didn't want any spiritual help, the reasons I left are personal, thank you for your concern. The best part was seeing Barbara every day for the months prior to my graduation. Sometimes I was stoned, sometimes I had beer on my breath, and I made sure she knew it. I can't exress to you the satisfaction it gave me to tell Babrara one day, after telling me that I couldn't go out 'till I had done some menial chore, "Barbara, I'm going to do whatever I damn well please. I am 18 years old, you are not my spiritual head any more, and your status as my step-mother exists only on paper and everyone knows it. The only authority you have over me is what I choose to GIVE you! Think about that!" The look on her face was worth all the money in the world.

  Expatbrit, I have a question about "proper" English spoken by your ilk over there across the pond. What the hell is up with the invisable "R" added to words that end with the letter "A"? For example:
  Written: We are in America.
  Brit speak: We are in America.
  *compared with*
  Written: America is at war.
  Brit speak: AmericER is at war.
  Another example from a UK band, Oasis:
  Written: a champaign supernova
  Brit speak: a champaign supernova
  *compared with*

  LDH, I don't know where you got the idea that I feel threatened. Rather presumptious on your part to assume you know what I'm feeling, dontcha think? I'll tell you what I'm feeling, annoyed at non-English speakers in the USA who have had ample time and opportunity to learn the language of this country. Bringing up the Native American thing is pointless and I will waste no more time on it, Xena said all that needs to be said. In your last post you said "So much for the theory of the lazy Mexican." I never mentioned the lazy Mexican, no one is putting down or generalizing a group of people from any specific country. You are off-topic. You have rushed to the defense of an issue that is not being discussed here. Many of us simply feel frustrated by the fact that so many people in the USA don't speak English and that it is affecting our lives adversly. We are expressing that frustration and you are defending minorities. One does not equal the other.

  Teejay, I think that deportation may be a little extreme, though I don't rule it out. I think that a basic grasp of the English language should be a prerequisite for citizenship. I think that voting ballots and DMV forms (among many other things) should be in English only, that alone would cause many people to learn English of their own will. I think that people in customer service rolls should be able to serve the customer, in America that should mean speaking English. I think that, if deportation was the punnishment for not knowing English, a very long grace period would have to be put into effect before the law was enforced, four years doesn't seem unreasonable. And also that the classes should be made free and convenient for those who would need them. Yes I think Americans should speak English. No I am not a heartless bastartd who wants to seal the boarders and who hates diversity.

  COMF, I agree with you on your assesment of the English language compared to others. All the rules I learned about spelling as a child seem to have a million exceptions. Inconsistancy is the rule with English and I freely admit that I can't spell worth a damn. Kinda like the standard vs. metric thing. Standard is lame as hell. Perhaps we could continue using the English language, but just change all these stupid spellings within it, a total overhaul. I mean just look at how we spell the place where we learn English, "school." ???

  Voltaire, I actualy know less German than you. I used a language translation site. Check the link below. I said something to the effect of "Voltaire, you dolt, you will never kick me out, NEVER! I will move powerful, unseen forces against you and force your relocation." and translated it to German, then used copy and paste. However, just now when I tried to reverse the process and put the posted German sentence back into English, it translated "Voltaire, form you dolt, you me for vacation never, NEVER! I shift the efficient, invisable forces against you and force your shift." Guess it's not 100% accurate. But it's fun!

  fodeja, pardon me for my misleading headline. I do not presume to know half as much about Austria as you seem to. In my defense I was simply using an article posted on another board as a segway into my support for a similar law here and my idea of free English classes to facilitate its implimentation. Incidentaly, the classes I suggest would, in this country, solve the problem of funding you mention in your second paragraph.

  LDH, what's the problem? The problem is that half the jobs I look for in the paper, that I am highly qualified for, say "must speak Spanish." The problem is that I have to repeat myself three or four times when going thru the drive thru or making a transaction at the bank or reserving a hotel room and my requests are still mishandled because the people in customer service don't understand the language. The problem is that I have no way to tell the landscaping guy not to spray weed killer this week because my girlfriend's daughter is going to be playing slip and slide on the lawn with her friends from out of town. If you don't consider those, and many others, problems than good for you. I guess I feel that I shouln't have to communicate using only hand jestures when I'm in my own neighborhood.
