What's The Main Reason You Do Not Believe That The Witnesses Are The Best Religion?
by minimus insome people leave because they are fed up with the elders.
others have personality issues.
some have doctrinal and prophecy reasons.

For me, it's not just any particular flip-flop or unscriptural rule or quirky, antisocial behaviour, but it is the COMBINATION of all those many things as a whole existing in a "religion" that claims to be the only one in the entire world that is correct and acceptable to God.
When you think about it, the Governing Body in Brooklyn, New York is the sole mouthpiece for God in the world? They alone are the only ones chosen to represent the Almighty God as directed by his (I would assume intelligent) Holy Spirit? Just to stop and think about that, it becomes obvious that it is totally unsound and illogical.

I am going to comment at today's Watchtower study on paragraph 18 and outline those rather nasty sins King David committed, including the 70,000 dying for his improper census taking, the death of Uzzah resulting from not bothering to follow instruction about the carrying of the Ark of the Covenant, having his nephew Joab kill Uriah, and then having Solomon kill Joab.
Everyone - if you happen to go/be dragged to a Kingdom Hall today, PLEASE make sure you give the above comment for paragrap 18. People should be made more aware of the kind of sterling example David REALLY is!
And thank you, Blondie, for making my Watchtower preparation a little more fun.

Jeffro:" Increasing 0 by 100% or 1000% or a million billion % is 0. "
Good point on perspective.
Also, any positive number compared with 0 is mathematically an infinite percent increase (which, of course, would seem to be a pretty good little pat on the back for them).

Listen, Obey, and Be Blessed - corrected version
by finally awake in1. if we have listened to herd, we will show it.. his demands oppress, and screw up our day.. it makes us unhappy to hear and to know it,.
and well be stressed if we know and obey.. (chorus).
2. this way of life, like a jail, is a sentence.

I think a more appropriate title for this little WT hymn would be "Listen, Obey - OR ELSE!" (Also known as the "Do What You're Told" song.)

What does perfection mean?
by speargrass55 ini was reading the thread about inheriting condemnation from adam and eve.
i would like your opinion on what was before that.
we all know the earth is hundreds of millions of years old.

The whole idea of the WT concept of "perfection" at the end of Christ's Millennial reign has always seemed illogical to me. Think of it - millions/billions of people (apparently there have been around 20 billion people who have lived all through man's history) living for an eternity without ever making a mistake!
So, that would mean that nobody would have a bad day and snap at their spouse/parent/child, nobody would do anything motivated by greed or selfishness, there would be no anger, envy, spite, or even pouting or forgetting someone's name . . . ever! (Or at least they would be instantly zapped by the Almighty One if they did do any kind of "sin.")
And if nobody were ever to make even a "mistake," then would typewriter keyboards need to even have a "delete" or "back space" key because nobody would ever press a wrong key? Would there ever be liquid paper, erasers, or, heaven forbid, band aids necessary? No slips of the tongue, no harsh tones, no overeating, etc., etc.?
Well, when you think of it - "perfection," whether physically or even in a moral sense, just seems, at the very least . . . unrealistic and mathematical impossible!

Blondie's Comments You Will Not Hear at the 12-09-2012 WT Study (SHOW SPIRIT)

JW GoneBad: " Compare that spirit to the spirit of the JW community: I was at my JW congregation meeting today and not one mention by the visiting speaker in his talk expressing his condolences over this horrific shooting; and not one mention expressing concern over the loss of life nor for the surviving family members in either the opening or closing meeting prayers. I’m sure it was the same loveless spirit in many if not most of the other 100,000+ JW congregations worldwide. "
Although the public speaker did briefly mention the Connecticut shooting, seeming to suggest that JWs express "concern" over it, my parents, especially my mother, kept commenting during the public memorial and candlelight vigil which was televised live on CNN that "we really shouldn't even be watching this because it is an inter-faith service." There were representatives of the major religions shown taking turns offering condolences and comfort each in their own way, after which President Obama gave an address to those present as well as to the nation.
I felt rather indignant at such an attitude - or "spirit" - being shown by my mother, who kept saying, "Most Witnesses probably wouldn't be watching this. We really shouldn't be watching this." Now, I know that the JWs have quite an exclusivity stance (i.e., they, and ONLY they, are correct and approved), but, come on - it was a memorial service for a most unfortunate tragedy, which very well could have been for one of their own children affected. As Ecclesiastes 7:2 says, "Better is it to go to the house of mourning than to go to the banquet house, because that is the end of all mankind; and the one alive should take [it] to his heart." I think that everyone, whether they are JW or something else or whatever, should feel totally free and justified to watch that memorial service, whether it's "inter-faith" or not.
There were representatives from the Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, and Muslim religions who had the decency and humility to give of themselves during that memorial event - I guess that shows what kind of "spirit" they show!

Why do all religions have to have really stupid beliefs that are an embarrassment.
by mP ini cant understand why some people want to start a new religion and they have to invent new stories, but why oh why do they have to be so stupid and why do people fall for them.
so many religions like the mormons, jw etc all have such down right nutty stupid beliefs its a wonder why they couldnt simply be more realistic... i dont get it..

I think it has to do with opportunity. Many people can have very unorthodox and illogical beliefs, but a select few are able to seize the opportunity to actually amass followers and wealth from it.
Take, for example, the many relatively small cults, such as the Jim Jones and Moonie cults from the 70s, and more recent ones, such as the Solar Temple cult sometime around the turn of this millennium (I forget exactly when). Fanciful ideas were able to end up evolving into groups with their own little structures.
Now take the social phenomena of supposed extraterrestrial manifestations; i.e., UFOs, the infamous Roswell flying saucer crash thing, alien abductions, etc., etc. It's rather surprising just how many folks fall for such fanciful ideas, even presumably intelligent people. I say "social phenomena" because, when you think of it, these things actually serve as a sort of applied psychological experiment. The Roswell thing is a prime example of how such a simple and insignificant event - probably some aircraft they were working on went plop on the ground - has been garnished and sculpted (sort of like the "broken telephone" party game) to the point where there is now a small but relatively sizeable following of folks, and there are even many paraphernalia items sold around the town in Roswell New Mexico such as T-shirts, alien masks, caps, mugs, bumper stickers, etc. And many such folks seem to actually believe it!
It just shows how people, even seemingly intelligent people, can fall head over heels for the most illogical and bizarre beliefs. I suppose it's maybe just a manifestation of the inner child in humans. But for some folks, I guess that inner child just gets way out of control!

Probably not so much the bizarre beliefs but also the bizarre rules and regulations which are unique to the Jehovah's Witnesses - i.e., the prolific and cumbersome does and don'ts.
With all the young ones leaving out the back door because of no Christmas, no birthdays - no normal holidays or celebrations of any kind - and the pressure to keep engaging in the tedious and grossly ineffecient method of field service preaching, all of which simply becoming too much for them to swallow - that ever growing mass exedous of such a seriously significant portion of their population will in the end be crippling.
Yes, this steady decline in the number of members pitted against the number baptized will continue to be destabilizing and demoralizing, especially in the developed Western lands where the Internet provides a stark and illuminating spotlight on that little man behind the curtain. It's the power of thinking and reason itself which will eventually prevail over such illogical and self-serving structures of institutionalized servitude.

Unlocking Phobia's in JW's - Steve Hassan's " Freedom of Mind " book
by flipper inmy wife and i finally finished steve hassan's latest book called " freedom of mind " so i wanted to devote one more thread to it in discussing how to recognize phobia's in witnesses or cult members and some methods hassan mentions to assist cult members.. on pg.
146 hassan states, " a cult phobia is a man-made mental illness that is an integral part of destructive influence.
a phobia is a persistent, irrational fear.

The two big fears they promote are those of Armageddon and of sinning against the holy spirit.
PaintedToeNail: " To this day, I cannot watch doomsday or armeggedon type movies, it induces panic attacks and horrible feelings of dread!" I can certainly relate to this. I have had reoccurring nightmares of a storm coming in the distance since childhood. The storm, of course, represents Armageddon.
The other fear - that of sinning against the holy spirit - was drummed into my head by my dad. This actually backfired, as I thought to myself, If I've already sinned against the holy spirit and there's no hope for me, then I might as well check out the "apostates" on the Internet - which is exactly what I did. Fortunately that worked out in that I was able to peak at the "man behind the curtain" and see the whole JW thing in a completely new light. Yes, that particular phobia can certainly end up backfiring on some people, producing yet another "apostate" - which can end up being a sort of "thorn in the flesh" for them.
