  Submitting a formal disassociation letter and having them close your file is the better option because it puts an end to all of their nonsense for you. After all, it looks like you’ve made your choice 100%, and you don’t have anything to lose by a possible blackmail situation (lucky you!).

  Think of it this way: if you decided that you didn’t want anything more to do with, say, another publishing company (yes, the WT is really just a publishing company – one that’s run as a cult), such as a published magazine or newspaper, or a CD/DVD/book-of-the-month club; or, say, an Internet service provider, cellphone wireless carrier, bank, insurance company, security home monitoring company, etc.; then you would want to send a formal letter, perhaps by registered mail, to clearly ensure that that service is to be completely terminated forthwith, wouldn’t you? (I would.) Otherwise, you could still remain subject to receiving unsolicited and unwanted communications or offers/promotions/advertising – which would only be fruitless for them and annoying for you.

  New Marriage Arrangement Rumor?

  so, i haven't lurked here in a long while however, i have been checking up more frequently and i saw that there is a rumor going around about getting barred from marriage if the brother not appointed by the time he is 23. is that true?

  if it is, i am so screwed haha.

  It’s obvious that the real consideration of the desirability of a person’s character (brother or sister) is only as it relates to the alignment with the Watchtower organization. So, if a brother is a real loser, has a grade five education, lives in a homeless shelter and makes a living begging for quarters, molests kids as a hobby, has a habit of slapping women whenever they say something he doesn’t particularly like, . . . . but he always has his Watchtower underlined/highlighted, submits a minimum “healthy” number of hours on his service time slip, seems to follow the petty rules (like no beards, no clinking glasses/toasting, no saying “happy birthday” or “happy Mother’s/Father’s Day), and (most importantly) doesn’t challenge or even question any teachings or policies of the Watchtower organization, . . . . then, well, he gets an official five-star rating from the local starched-shirt elders and circuit overseer.

  In other words, apparently what counts is, not the quality of his metal, but the color of his nose (i.e., brown!).

  in the april 15th watchtowerstudy ed why is the article about how loving dissfellowshipping is curiously missing from simplified addition ?

  Perhaps they want the simplified edition to be a little more “public friendly”; i.e., a bit less scary – and not quite as much give “new ones” the message “RUN!”

  Sparlock!! ornamental toy now available

  I can see the WTS producing actual Sparlock dolls themselves, of the same size as the one depicted in their famous original animated video, and requiring all JWs to purchase one for their child – who then has to throw it in the garbage!

  They could make a second yearly celebration out of it, in addition to the Memorial – and call it, say, “Sparlock Throwing-In-The-Garbage Day” – where all the JW children formally throw out their Sparlock dolls (representing the purging of Satan’s evil old world of higher education, pagan holidays, beards, people clinking glasses in toasts, etc.) into a garbage can.

  They could maybe have it as separate private celebrations, with the garbage cans formally decorated, and cake and ice cream . . . . kind of like the normal birthday parties those kids never had!

  I can see blue threads being handed out for putting above the fringed edges of everyone’s skirts and shirts at the next annual meeting. After all, not wearing a blue string above the fringed edge of your skirt or shirt is disgusting!

  Welcome, “Sofia Lose”! So glad to hear of another person daring to investigate outside of the little JW box. I couldn’t help noticing you mentioning “’till death do us part” in your opening post. Although I certainly wish you and your partner the very best, you must ultimately be true to yourself. That is the important thing, as I believe that this is life – this go at the great smorgasbord – is a one-time-only occurrence. Live it well, and be true to yourself.

  “Island Man”: “Why not watch a movie about someone who is in the grip of a cult or some other psychologically manipulative authority that uses fear of the opposition to keep the person ignorant of the truth and in continued mental enslavement to the cult or authority.”
  
  To “cappytan”: A really good movie to see about getting involved with cults is the 1981 movie Ticket to Heaven (see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083201/?mode=desktop&ref_=m_ft_dsk. My high school class called “Man In Society” actually showed that movie as part of the course. Later, my long-time elder dad gave a talk in that class as a guest speaker representing the local congregation. I hope at least one of the students in that class was able to connect the dots.
  
  Anyway, “cappytan,” you should definitely watch that movie with her, as I am positive that it will set off some lightbulbs in her head. You can tell her that someone (me) recommended that movie. It’s most certainly worth a shot. Just stay home from the next meeting and “make it a Blockbuster night.” Consider it necessary medicinal therapy to help her wake up from the dangerous and life-sucking coma.

  Hot topic in congregations: having a beard/goatee

  i am starting this topic because i was wondering, i see many who leave "the truth" are glad because they can finally have a beard.

  is having a beard really a no go in congregations?

  how is / was it in your congregation?.

  I grew a full beard a few years ago when my family and I lived in a somewhat small town. I started growing it when my folks were away on vacation for a week. After they returned, I decided to just keep it growing. I let it grow for about a year or so. During that time, a couple of elders visited me and informed me that I would have to shave it off or else I would be off the Theocratic Ministry School. I defiantly kept it for a while longer, and I actually even had a lawyer in a high-end city law firm send a detailed opinion letter to the local elders, with a copy to the Canadian Bethel headquarters. I only shaved it off later to be able to more fully enjoy some romantic kisses – but that was only of my own accord.

  My advice is: don’t ever allow any man-made “leaders” to dictate the grooming of your own body. Believe me, they’re certainly not entitled to that level of control! (They just think they are.)
