Galaxy, my point is that here on JWN, some believers and some atheists are pushy and evangelistic about their beliefs. In the world outside JWN, I rarely hear anyone discuss religion or atheism. I have friends who are believers and friends who are atheists. Both are pretty respectful of each other's views, on the rare occasion that either is discussed. But, I live in West Michigan, which is a pretty respectful culture, in general.

An important difference between atheists and true believers
by Hortensia intrue believers, whether christian, muslim or whatever, want to convert you, they want you to believe what they do, and they're willing to go to extremes to make it happen.
atheists don't really care what you believe, and don't go out of their way to convert someone.. http://ow.ly/vn1jz an example of what believers in power do to suppress any difference in thought.
http://ow.ly/vraeo an example of why believers want to suppress different ideas (because they can't win in a fair fight, that's why).

It would be a bit out of character for him to be pushy about his beliefs or non beliefs, Cofty.

Julian is an atheist. He does not believe there is a god. Yes, Julian does believe in astrology. He's 18, by the way. He's not one to be overly strict about what an atheist can believe or not believe. Whatever he believes or doesn't believe, he isn't pushy about it.

If you are anything like me, your beliefs aren't static. My views have changed through out my life. We all have our journeys.

Outside of this religious discussion forum I almost never mention religion or atheism to anybody.
I make an exception when somebody tries to convert me...
Mentioning atheism isn't a problem. I find it interesting to hear how people have come to the conclusions they have made. As long as they are sharing, it's fine, even if it is someone religious. The problem comes in if someone will not accept that I have made my own very thoughtful conclusions and that it's okay if mine are different. I don't blame you, Cofty, no one likes to feel the pressure to be a convert.

Who was your favourite Jesus?
by new hope and happiness ini think my favourite portrayal of jesus was lothaire bluteau in " jesus of montreal" .
thats also my reccomendation for a great movie.. anyway it would be fun to compile a list of actors, that have portrayed jesus and how it effected our perception of jesus..

The hippy in church poster: sounds like a pretty cool way of letting Christians know that they should be more understanding about hippies.

So outside a forum for the discussion of all things religious you don't see a lot of discussion of all things religious. Fascinating!
Outside a forum for ex jws, I don't see a lot of atheists pushing atheism, in religious way. I do run across atheists. My grandson is an atheist. What strikes me as a big difference between ordinary life and JWN, is that outside the forum when a believer of any kind expresses something about his beliefs, he doesn't have atheists confront and try to persuade him of atheism. Julian has friends who believe in various things. He is respectful of their personal feelings. Where I see a difference is that Julian has never been involved with an intensely, evangelistic faith. He hasn't learned that kind of behavior. He can be opinionated, but when it comes to atheism and religion, he tends to mirror the respectfulness of the Episcopal Church, which is not evangelistic. They teach that every person is on a unique journey.

Outside the exjw community, atheists don't tend to evangelize, though it does happen. At least here on JWN, there is a noticeable amount of proseltysm type behavior from some atheists.

One of Julian's friends committed suicide on Saturday. They will be giving him the full Roman Catholic rituals for the dead, including the Rosary service they do the night before the funeral. I'm without a car still, but I hope I can go. He was spending a lot of time here the past few weeks. I know the services will offer some comfort.
