  Do you know your neighbors? Is it just me?

  i'm a single hispanic guy in my mid 30s living by myself in suburban america.

  i own a home in the kind of neighborhood where you have to get hoa permission to do just about anything, including chopping down a tree.

  i'm a white collar worker and lead a pretty boring life.

  Where I live, it's the culture for people to be very to themselves and hard to get to know. It's very unlike the culture I grew up with in the south. There is a very predominant dutch culture and it's very conservative. This is not a place where you can just chat with a stranger in the grocery store.

  I am a white, middle aged lady. Do you know who the friendliest people are, around here? Hispanic people. Usually HIspanic people will smile and talk with me. I have come to accept that the people are good people, they are just very conservative when it comes to being outgoing to sharing.

  I doubt her statistics anyway. From the research I've done, it's a much higher percentage of theists or deists than 7%. Many scientists are so blown away by the complexities and marvel of our material world, that it moves them to belief in some kind of deity. I know my oceangrapher/inventor dad said similar things about the world and God. He had friends who were geologists and from other fields of science. I can remember them discussing atheism. None of them were atheists. They felt the world was too amazing for there to be no god involved somewhere.

  when people willfully believe something without evidence, or contrary to evidence, are they neglecting thier moral responsibility?

  so many people say faith is a virtue but i just can't comprehend why anyone would think that.

  another reason to go against those arguing that young children should be taught how to use guns.

  My sister in law's son bought her a small gun to go in her purse, for protection. He took her to the shooting range and taught her to shoot. Guess who killed herself, while cleaning her gun? Her husband hated guns. He's lost his wife and best friend. The two sons have lost their mom.

  I'm not against owning guns. They are very dangerous, though.

  which would you pick (and perhaps why):.

  1) you can continue living your life as it is, die when you might, and that's that.. 2) you can instead agree to die in 1 year in exchange for this: you will be granted access to the entire past and future history of intelligent life in the universe.

  2- study the background about the bible (from non-religious sources) to see where it came from.

  3- discard (or at least set aside) chuyrch claims and dogma.. 4- read it, looking up archaeological/historical sources about the places and peoples referred to.

  but in this stressful world with sooooo many sects, faiths, religions, philosophies.....most of us should be given a "pass" just for surviving this mess without losing our sanity and trying to do the best we can to "play nice."

  Certainly if we can cut each other and ourselves slack, then a god could, too. Hopefully God would be as aware of these factors as you or I am. If I am intelligent enough to see there are extenuating circumstances to everyone's unique story, then we hope that God is, too. I'm a theist, but I know that the god portrayed in the Bible is at worst a monster bully, a cretin and an abusive parent. At best he's alienated a lot of people with his inconsistent, split personality. You might find it helpful to look into the concept of universalism.
