I went to jw dot org recently to see what they said about this apparent inconsistency, and to check out why they ŵere celebrating a glorified birthday, sorry anniversary! The answer was that whilst there has been one hundred glorious years of Kingdom rule this is distinct from millennial rule which is the thousand year period. I think.

Pinker on Terrorism .... Self-Defeating

Not a terrorist organisation, but tactics similar to those described by Pinker are certainly employed. And these first lead to boredom of course, and easy prey/well behaved flock. And then those who leave are open to mental torture, fear and PTSD too - whilst actual lives are not taken they are no less destroyed.

'as they become frustrated by their lack of progress and as their audiences start to get bored, they escalate their tactics.' Sounds like an organisation we all know well!

CO's visit ends with a bombshell!!!
by nowwhat? inat the end of his final talk he said of the gb: they are telling the higher ups , "start getting ready we're not going to be around much longer!
" and we expect the angels to release the four winds any day now!
" my first thought was why are you building a corporate country club then?!

CrimsonAshes - introducing legislation to ban more extremist factions of society is not the same as banning religion, if that's the inference you meant. Allowing the banning of groups who threaten and undermine the stability of society as a whole is a positive thing, along with those who pedal hate and intolerance. I personally would love to see the witnesses banned to kingdom come and beyond for the veiled intolerance that used to be printed in their 'literature'. However now they've wised up and their public faces are very different to the private ones shown at meetings and behind the scenes.
Also all this legislation would do is bring into the open what at present many governments are already allowed to do. For instance although the UN declaration of Human Rights is signed by member states they are allowed to veto this if the stabilty and security of the country is thought to be at risk. So the rights of the human are always secondary to that of the state.
Anyway, veering off topic here, but I think the CO was scare mongering. And they are well known for going off piste. In fact very last meeting I was at the CO managed to twist scripture to say that god would never forgive a divorced person. It was quite some feat.

Take care. It's the hardest thing I've known when family choose their belief system over you. The anger will give way to something else in time, and you will be a stronger person for it. Try to remember how brave and strong you have had to be already to break free from this cult. It makes me sad and angry to know how many have to suffer this way, but you've broken the cycle for your little boy. Love him hard today.

Eating disorders - advice about someone
by 88JM ini'm sure there are probably a few posters on here that have had experience themselves or had family members with eating disorders.
i'm posting here not for myself, but out of concern for someone else.. there is a teenage (about 16, recently baptized) brother who quite obviously has an eating disorder.
i have personally been at a few gatherings and seen him refuse all food while everyone else was eating, with the excuse that "he wasn't hungry", so i can say it's definitely an eating disorder and not some allergy or just a one-off.. i'm also not the only one who has noticed it - i've been in discussions with a few brothers and sisters who have also remarked on his conditon, but don't seem to know any more about it than i do.

I was badly anorexic from about the age of 15-22, and struggled with eating throughout my 20's. Despite a lot of professional help the problem only really resolved itself when I left the witnesses, I've been gone nearly seven years and have been fine the whole time. As has been said anorexia is about control, when you can't control anything else then you at least can control what does, or doesn't, go into your body. So don't take the control away from him. Right now he needs it, however crazy that might sound. He needs to be in control of whatever choices he makes next, and hopefully with your help these will be constructive ones.
Anorexia is also a way of saying what you're too scared to say, subconsciously at least. When I was ill I knew the 'truth' wasn't for me, I knew I was lying, but being ill stopped me from having to say it, it said there was something wrong, but not what exactly. so if you can then open up to him, help him feel comfortable with you, and you might find what he really needs is a friend with doubts who is trying to fade.
anorexia also can be about a struggle to grow up, to become a sexual being, often is linked to abuse/repression. Of course I'm not saying this us the case here, but you can see how complex an illness it is.
whatever you do try not to talk about food or weight, these are just external manifestations of an horribly difficult internal situation. Don't think you can fix him, I know it's scary for you to watch, he might get thinner before he gets better, but he will have to reach his own rock bottom, have his own dark night of the soul before he is ready to begin to get better.
sadly theres no quick fix. Sounds like you're already being his friend, that's really what he needs right now.

Will JW.ORG actually harm the WT Society Long Term ?
by flipper inmy son and i were discussing this yesterday over coffee.
since the wt society in previous years virtually demonized going on the internet at all for jw's - now wt leaders are doing a complete turn around or about face probably so as to " compete " or keep up with all the anti-jw websites that are out there to give the wt society point of view.. however- it very well may backfire on them as once people start doing google searches looking for jw.org it will bring up all the other websites dealing with any jw issues and in the privacy of their own homes out of curiosity i'm sure lots of jw's are going to want to check out some of these sites to see what all the " apostate " hoopla is all about.
i wonder how many jw's will do this and will it have an effect in opening more minds to other views ?

I reckon the real reasoning behind jw.org is two fold.
Firstly it's a great way to appear transparent whilst at the same time burying all the past doctrinal errors. 'Oh but everything's on line for everyone to see', they can say. But it only goes back 10 years, and even then who really is going to bother to look when first coming to the site? I've tried to search the site, it's functionality is terrible - and I don't believe that's cos the web designers didn't know what they were doing. Nope, it's deliberate so it's nearly impossible to find contradictory informaton unless you feel compelled to wade through stacks and stacks of trite nonsense.
Secondly - and I think this is the real reason - they are trying to divert attention away from sites like this, where the real truth is to be found. Making sure people don't google JWs, and instead land straight on their site, controlling the information they have access to. And putting up the terms and conditions about use of copyrighted material means they have a legal - albeit shaky - leg to stand on when info is reproduced here and other places. That's probably why there were the recent apostate WTs too, keep people 'safe' online, put the fear of the dangerous other into followers.
Also it makes them appear nicer and not as culty as they do if say an interested person's first point of contact was a meeting. For instance their talk about not shunning on the website - to paraphrase - 'no we don't shun, unless of course the person can't be helped, is beyond redemption blah blah, then we shun out of love'. It makes them look pretty acceptable and banal to the casual observer.
It's a great exercise in brand loyalty too, they've created a strong brand identity with the website and their creepy blue square, which will make current JWs more likely to buy into it.
Will it backfire? I hope so. For those on the fringes anyway it might. That was more than two reasons, I will stop now!

Circuit Accounts Servants Confesses how the SCAM WORKS!!
by JT inyes, i too have wondered how an assembly that is held in a fully paid for assembly hall, with no food service, could possibly have $10,000 in expenses.
i suppose the bethel speakers have transportation expenses - maybe $1000 or so.
as for rent on the assembly hall, well you have already paid for it once, why pay again?

It explains too the need for all the different legal entities the WTBTS have, makes it very very hard to work out where the money goes. I knew it wasn't the truth a long way back. But hadn't worked out the degree to which it's a financial scam as well as theological!

Hi,
I've been lurking here for a while, was brought up a witness, and left in 2007. Upped and left half way through a meeting when I couldn't stand it any more. But fet compelled to comment on this. I've worked for charities, Oxfam and Mercy Corps, and have been investigating JW's accounting half heartedly for a couple of months. It's easy to make the assembly halls run at a loss - registered as charities then all they need to do is donate excess funds to the WTBTS or the worldwide work, and BOOM, there's no mony left. I really believe they've got a pretty sophisitacted scam going on when it comes to donations etc.
